Race Journey debrief

CHICAGO KNOWS WHAT’S UP!! 🇺🇸🔥

CHECKS KASHED🥇💰

When I got into the Chicago Marathon, the goal was sub-3. Realistically, I knew that was a MASSIVE stretch. But there’s nothing wrong with dreaming big, right? 😂

All year, I’d been saying, “TILL THE WHEELS COME OFF.” Well, after Comrades and HYROX, they started coming off. Slowly but surely. 🥲😂

Just over two weeks before Chicago, I had a call with Doc @raaghib_fredericks to arrange an ultrasound.

The conversation started with:

Me: “Doc, whatever the scan reveals, you know I’m still running, right?” 😂
Doc: “Ya, I know😂

When my physio heard I tore my calf, she got emotional😂 Then she got straight to work, determined to get me to that start line and, more importantly, across the finish line. 🏁

Then came the conversation with my coach @mikeobery
Quick and simple chat:

Hard taper! No running! Collect the medal‼️

Sorry, correction… he said, “COLLECT THE FUCKING MEDAL!” 😂
Me: SAY LESS!!! 🫡

The plan was simple: forget the time, soak up the experience and have the best fucking time of my life.

And that’s exactly what I did.

I started my watch, changed the screen and made sure I had absolutely NO idea what pace I was running or what time I was on. No chasing splits. No sub-3 or sub 4 pressure etc. Just me, the streets of Chicago and 42.2 km of making memories.

Thankfully the first few km’s felt okay and then I knew I was good to go 😎

S/O to my physio @_hayleykuhn for working tirelessly to get me to that start line. 🥳

Sometimes, the goal changes. The dream takes a back seat. And the only thing that matters is getting to the start line, embracing the journey and making the most of the opportunity.

Chicago, you were everything I needed and more. 🇺🇸🏅

Came for the experience…
Leaving with a memory of a lifetime. 🌆🏅

In light of the recent events that have deeply affected our running community, we’ll be wearing black and coming together to honour the lives of the women we’ve lost, and to stand with the women who deserve to feel safe.
