Your neighbor is not your enemy.

Our differences are not hate.

You are worth more than the label you wear.

Love is choice. You must choose it.

Peace is a choice. You must make it.

Your Nation is blessed. You must embrace it.

The government is not your god.

The media is not your friend.

Your enemy is not flesh and blood.

Your life has a purpose.

Your moment is NOW.

If you were waiting on a sign… here it is.

One of the greatest honors a man can have is to stand beside his brother on his wedding day. To be that “Best Man” as he steps into a new chapter of life. A quiet, unwavering presence that says “I’m here. For you. For you both. Through it all.”

I’ve never been a Best Man, and I’ve always wondered what a wedding looked like from the boots of the Minister. To be the voice that joins a couple in their new journey, to bless their union as they promise the rest of their lives to each other. This day I got to experience both.

I have no words for how proud I am of this man. We all feel God pull at our hearts from time to time, and so many of us pull back to keep control of the wheel. Surrender isn’t a word most men use to describe themselves. But I’ve never seen a more powerful display of strength than watching Sonny surrender it all to Jesus. His walk inspires my own more and more everyday.

I’d be lying if I said a few tears didn’t find me that day. I had never done this before, I wasn’t sure if the Minister was supposed to cry. It didn’t matter. I figured the Best Man could, so there was a bit of a loophole. My brother was responding to God’s tapping on his heart, and he simply said “I do”. To Him, to her, to himself. Tears were the only response I could find.

I’m grateful for this honor. To pronounce this wonderful couple man and wife. To bless their marriage. To stand beside my brother on his wedding day. To just be another small spoke in the wheel of this man’s journey to Jesus. “So then, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” taken in Grand Teton, Wyoming by @crucifix

There’s a lot things I could say about Grandpa. Veteran, businessman who saw success most of us only dream about. But that’s not what I remember… I only knew the man who gave it all up to be a preacher at a little church in Tucker Georgia. A man who loved every soul that walked through his doors, and taught the Bible until he was barely able to stand.

On Sunday, August 23rd he woke up next to Grandma, went to church in their assisted living home. Listened to his daughter play the piano. Then gently passed away at the lunch table holding the hand of his wife of 72 years. He went so peacefully she thought he had fallen asleep.

The funeral felt more like a celebration than a goodbye. Family I haven’t seen in years, stories passed back and forth with tears and laughter. I walked my sons up to the casket draped with an American flag. “Do you want to say goodbye?” Cason looked at him for a moment, then looked back at me. “No, he’s not in there. He’s with Jesus.”

It was a blessing to be in that room, all six of my children, my granddaughter meeting her great, great grandmother for the first time. I was strong all day. The faces were familiar. Faces I expected to be there. Then I turned around and there was Sonny in an all black suit. It was the only time the whole day I cried. I didn’t expect that face, and I don’t think he’ll ever fully know just how much it meant to see him standing there.

As I walked up to the pulpit to read the last bit of scripture, I glanced down at a small wooden stand with a purple bow beside the stage. Wind chimes. He always loved wind chimes. I wasn’t close enough to read the letter, but close enough to see THE CRU FAMILY printed across the front. I smiled. It was like a hug on my heart from so many hearts I’ve hugged through music.

The rest of the day was something I can’t explain. I can only imagine it’s what heaven feels like. A party, where everyone’s hearts are connected. No turmoil or grief. Just a quiet falling into the arms of God beside those who love you. That day, I wasn’t sad for Grandpa, just a bit envious. Because I couldn’t stop wondering what his first few days in heaven were like. 🕊️✝️

I’ll be seeing you soon Grandpa. taken in Gainesville, Georgia by @crucifix

It’s taken me a few weeks to find the strength to make this post, to be honest I’m still struggling to find the words. On August 15th, I was traveling home from Nashville and decided to stop by to see my grandparents in Atlanta. It was a beautiful day, the smiles, the hugs, the grand tour of their new home in assisted living.

A grand piano sat in the main hall where I was able to play and sing to them, making up random songs about stories that should’ve long since been forgotten. I left not knowing whether it would be the last time I saw them... For my grandfather, it was. He passed away just eight days later. These were my last moments with him. 🕊️💔 by @crucifix

A little over a year ago I got a call in the middle of the night. My brother Sonny said he was going to propose and asked if I would officiate the wedding. Without hesitation, I said yes. I was excited for him, and didn’t think much beyond that.

As the months ticked by and the wedding closed in I knew the inevitable was coming… I had to get ordained. I kept pushing it off. It’s not that I didn’t want to, I’ve thought about it for years. I just knew it was so much more than a certificate on the wall, and I felt too dirty, like I had made too many mistakes in life to frame it.

When ordination day came, a heaviness came with it. A weight of responsibility I wasn’t sure I was ready to carry. Followed by the most inexplicable peace. A washing over. Like God tapped me on the shoulder and said “You’re enough. Not because of anything you’ve done, but because of what My Son did for you. Today is a new day. Take up your cross and don’t look back.” So I did.

I’ve always been the first to admit, I’m a mess of a man. Always have been, and I can’t imagine the road ahead won’t wear its own share of potholes. But I accept this precious honor, this title I don’t deserve, with the utmost reverence, and press forward, praying God will give me the strength to run and not fumble the ball.

Sonny I thank you, without you I would’ve never knocked on this door. Pastor Shannon I thank you, without you I would’ve never been able to walk through it. Papa Cruce I thank you, without your example I would’ve never even known what a Godly man should look like.

Thank you for believing in me, and trusting, that despite what’s behind me, God still sees something useful in what’s ahead. Use me Lord for Your glory, continue to mold me, shape me to look more like Jesus, forgive me of all my failures, which are beyond number, and give me the strength to run the rest of this race in a way that honors You. 🙏🏽 taken in Gillsville Baptist Church by @crucifix

Note to self; Love is patient, love is kind, it doesn’t envy, it doesn’t boast, it isn’t proud, it isn’t angry, it doesn’t keep track of wrongs. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes and never gives up. Love never fails. 💪🏽🔥 taken in Grand Teton, Wyoming by @crucifix
