Last year @kongweepang was awarded a grant from @artsmemphis to expand batik into her practice and bring more of her Malaysian roots into her work here in the U.S. I went along to film and document the process, but there was some space for me to work too, and I couldn’t resist.

I ended up making this scarf and really fell in love with batik. The wax is unpredictable and unforgiving, but you can also be strategic about building up color in layers. There’s a lot about the process that feels familiar to me as a printmaker.

A big thank you to our guru @lizaisharuddin and the whole team for welcoming us, sharing your knowledge, and being so generous with this beautiful craft. I hope I get to spend more time with batik in the future. by @crumjay

From studio visits to conversations with some of the leaders shaping public art, our trip to New York gave our fellows an up-close look at what’s possible.
Every stop offered new ideas, fresh perspectives, and a deeper understanding of what it takes to bring large-scale public art to life. We’re excited to bring those lessons back to Memphis and continue investing in the next generation of public artists.

Still unpacking my week in NYC.
Grateful for the @urbanartmemphis fellowship, the chance to get to know my cohort better, and a few extra days with @kongweepang. Made a little pilgrimage to the Brooklyn Banks, caught up with old friends, made a few new ones, and saw a lot of public art. by @crumjay
