Happy due date to our 30 weekers! 💛 Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d have twins. I’ll never forget the fear I felt when I heard “there’s two.” I wish I could hug that version of me alone in the ultrasound room and tell her everything will be okay and what miracles Charlie and Cooper are.

Once they were here I felt 10,000lbs lifted off my chest. I saw them, I heard them, I touched them. We’re good. They were wheeled away immediately. I was handed a breast pump in an empty postpartum room when all I ached for was golden hour, latching, skin to skin and studying the faces I had imagined for 7months. We saw them through their isolettes a few hours later and studied what I could see of their faces under the wires and tubes. I wept at their bedside in a wheelchair and that’s when it all hit me. Oh this is just the beginning.

Things started out smooth. The hardest thing we had done yet was leave the hospital without them. 2 weeks in I got a phone call. “Hey mama Cooper is not acting like himself.. get up here as soon as you can.” I’ll never forget when we first saw him. I’ve never seen such a sick baby. Gray and whimpering with every breath. We prayed for another miracle. We had been told from the beginning that NICU was like a rollercoaster or a white water rafting ride. We just didn’t expect so many things to go so wrong.

Standing at my 2lb son’s bedside I asked, “Will he be okay?” The provider told me the antibiotics should work. I asked “but what if they don’t?” She looked at me and said “nobody is going overboard.” I wept. 24hr later Charlie presented the same symptoms and they were both down.

The next 13 days were an absolute living nightmare. I’ll always remember one silent car ride home and sitting in the driveway before going in to our 2 year old. We felt entirely defeated. I couldn’t move. Collin looked at me with tears in his eyes and told me, “we will bring our babies home.” I looked at him through tears and nodded. I don’t know if either of us believed it in that moment. Since the beginning we ached for them to be home. We didn’t know that we would ever have to question if they would by @crunchwithrach
