TIL You save more token usage by using an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY instead of a subscription when using Claude Code CLI b/c w/the subscription all the messages are getting sent to anthropic servers each time. Prompt Caching for subscription only happens in the web browser (claude.ai). With the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY prompt caching is enabled from your terminal (caches in their servers for 5 min by default unless you configure it differently).
Also, caching gets invalidated & all messages have to be resent again if you switch model, effort, add/update a skill/agent/mcp, any toggles (basically anything that changes the ‘system’), & images.
Also, using API key has no limits. Buying “usage credits” or upgrading subscription still maintains weekly & daily limits.

Apart from not having any limits, I haven’t noticed a difference in token usage rate decline yet. Has anyone else?
