Ooof.. don’t get me started on Hispanic Heritage Month.

A Mexican American that was born and raised in El Paso, TX. 🤍⭐️🇲🇽 Although I’ve moved more than a decade ago, I will always rep my hometown. If you’re from EP you know exactly how, and when to use that phrase, “AyAy” #915 #eptx915

On my mom’s side I was the first. The first daughter, granddaughter, niece. And the first to get a bachelors degree. I have my degree in Business from my one of the top Business Schools in the U.S.. W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU. I know this achievement made my ancestors proud ☺️

I still pinch myself sometimes that I work for Newsweek, a global news magazine based in NYC that’s at the World Trade Center.(Duuude.. if you open the magazine, you’ll see my name in it! Lol. I just think that’s so cool) Every time I go to the office, I can’t believe it. Here’s a little story time:

While living in NYC, I was still going to school and applying for part-time jobs that I could add to my resume before eventually moving back to the West Coast.

I was very intentional about setting myself up for future opportunities. I remember thinking, “If recruiters see that I worked in NYC, I think that’ll look great on my resume.”So naturally, I started looking for marketing jobs.

Lo and behold, my husband came across a social media position for Newsweek’s show, Unconventional.

I went through interviews with 3 or 4 different people, and honestly, I was convinced they weren’t going to hire me. 😂

They had seen my social media, and at the time, most of what I posted was me promoting my beauty business. I remember thinking, “I’m way too girly-girl for this.”😂

And to make it even more intimidating, the show is all about the military, and the host had done some seriously cool, very manly stuff. 😅So I was thinking, “Yeah…there’s no way they’re picking me.”

But they did. 🥹

And the funny thing is, the exact thing I thought would make me less qualified was actually part of what made me stand out.

I was constantly showing up on social media. I was building my personal brand. I was sharing my life, including my life as a military spouse. I was showing them who I was.

“If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere, that’s what they say..got a pocket full of dreams”

Phew! We made it! 🥹🙌🏽We did not come to NYC to play y’all! We came here to ᴇᴠᴏʟᴠᴇ 💫

Cryslynn’s and Caylee’s resiliency was on another level. They went to school in Harlem! VERY different from what they were used to. Cryslynn is a veteran as a military brat & has always done so good with change and meeting new friends and absolutely LOVED the city life. She actually says she would love to move back. I was worried for Caylee as she had to start school in NY and is very timid and shy. I heard the kids in NYC were just a little more rowdy and mature for their age and there were some that were but this actually made her get out of her shell a little! I’m so proud of them for adapting to something very new 🥹 definitely gets them ready for the future.

Phuoc graduated from COLUMBIA University y’all. One of the most prestigious universities in the U.S.! Oh ya know.. it’s just the University that Barack Obama graduated from 🤯 He absolutely killed it and obtained his Masters in Public Administration that he can now apply in his career in the Navy & one day pivot into politics. This man always inspires me.

If y’all don’t have a partner that inspires & motivates you to do better, then I suggest YOU make a change & be the one that inspires them! With that being said..because he’s always achieving the next big thing, it really inspired me to get my degree in business! After 6 long years of taking online courses, I finally graduated as cum laude 🙌🏽 This was probably the most difficult challenge I encountered as I have always had a job, take care of the fam, & take care of myself PLUS wanted to tap into the world of Network Marketing! If you ain’t crying in the middle of the night to work on yourself, then you’re not growing.I spent MOST of my time in NY just trying to learn & grow & mission freakin accomplished. Never done though! JS!

We all went in with goals and we all came out with achievements. We came out wiser, educated & humbled. NYC changes you on all levels & are very blessed that we were given this opportunity 🤍

Do you remember where you were on this day?

I do.

I remember hearing my mom and dad talking in the other room about something they had just watched on TV. At the time, I thought they were talking about a movie. They were wondering if we should all just stay home that day, but we just went about our normal routines.

When I got to school, everything felt different.

Every teacher had the news on. No one was teaching. Everyone was trying to wrap their heads around what had just happened. There was confusion. There was sorrow. And there was this overwhelming feeling that we were witnessing something that would forever be remembered.

I remember hearing, “We are living through history. There will be history books written about this devastating terrorist attack.”

And they were right.

I’ve always felt empathy for the lives lost and for everyone impacted by 9/11. But after living in NYC for two years, that empathy became something even deeper.

Being there, walking the streets, seeing the memorial, and realizing that this city still carries the weight of that day... you can’t help but think about how it all unfolded. How terrified people must have been. The families waiting for answers. The first responders who ran toward danger. The lives that were forever changed in just a matter of hours.

If you’re ever in NYC, visiting the 9/11 Museum and Memorial is an absolute must. But I will warn you, you will probably walk out emotionally drained.

Some days in history become more than just a date. They become a reminder.

A reminder to never forget the lives that were lost. To honor the heroes who showed up with courage & to hold the people we love a little closer.

And to remember that even 25 years later, September 11th is a day that should never be forgotten. 🤍 by @crysssbri
