sometimes something epic happens and it changes the whole trajectory of your life!!! a few months ago i got hired at @autophoto right before the museum’s grand opening. since then, i have made some Awesome friends, and i’ve gotten to learn how to take care of analog photobooths from @autophoto_bre who is a well of wisdom, and is doing so much to pass her knowledge along so we can keep these booths alive.

being a photobooth technician feels like being part-chemist, part-mechanic, part-photographer, part-historian, part-hazardous waste manager. full-time magician. it’s been really exciting to learn a new way of analog photo processing after working in film labs for the past few years & new ways of keeping memory tangible. there’s so much more to learn! i love getting my hands dirty!! i love working with old stuff. i love a screen-less task. i love going to work every day at a woman-run business and that’s something i’m so grateful for. it’s a labor of love and of patience and of slowness.

it’s new having myself as a subject in front of the camera—these are some of my morning test strips. the color ones are particularly special: color chemistry + paper stopped being produced in 2005. any supply left remaining in the world is a very limited & special deadstock. once it’s gone, it’s gone forever!

the photobooth was invented 100 years ago! and at the time it was essentially the only way queer couples could have photos together, and how we’re able to have an archive of their existence, and i think about that a lot. there are less than 300 analog booths still working in the world and an incredible community of technicians who service them. go use one! long live analog!!! taken in AUTOPHOTO by @crystal.silva
