Next to my beautiful Portuguese Jew grandmother and birthday twin. 🥰🇨🇻

On this day, only 46 year ago, present day Cape Verde gained “independence” from those that exiled it’s first inhabitants from their native lands in Portugal. The inhabitants were native Portuguese Jews. These Portuguese Jews, along with their Spanish Jew brethren, were referred to as “#negro”, “Judeus Segredos (#secretjews )”, “#marranos ”, or “#moorishjews “ by their European counterparts.

Refusing the European monarchs’ demand to abandon the faith and traditions of their forefathers, these Negro Jews were sent to Africa; if not killed or inhumanly sent off as slaves in other foreign lands.
After arriving in Africa, the Judeus Segredos began to die out due to the unfamiliar habitat. Because of this, the European monarchs began sending unconverted native Portuguese and Spanish Jews to Island and Coastal lands. Among the holding destinations for these Negro Jews were the uninhabited Cape Verde Islands and Judah (Ouidah) on the Coast of West Africa. Judah, and surrounding areas, became a part of what came to be called the Slave Coast (see map) and is in present day Benin/Togo and Nigeria. Both Cape Verde and Judah would soon become key slave ports for the Portuguese Europeans during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade; which began not long after the Negro Jews were exiled to Africa.
Despite this lost/hidden history and heritage, today many of the descendants of these Portuguese Jews remain in Cape Verde as the beautiful, colorful, and warm people they have always been.

These are a couple of the things I learned during quarantine. With a bit of digging, and a lot of reading of old history books and journals, I found TRUTH! Which is what we’re all looking for right now, right? I hope quarantine allowed you all a bit of time to learn more about yourselves and your heritage as well 😉

Well. 2018 was theeee wildest year of my life (so far). So many new experiences. I saw so much of the world. Met so many amazing people. Worked with some of God’s most beautiful and talented artists.
