My dear Uncle Calvin Lawton passed away last night at the age of 94.

While my heart is heavy, I am also so grateful for the full and remarkable life he lived. Uncle Calvin was still sharp-minded, independent, and very much himself. He lived life on his own terms and accomplished so much along the way.

He was a world-class pool player, a gifted self-taught artist and painter, and one of the easiest people to get along with in our family. He was quiet, gentle, well-loved, and simply a beautiful soul.

One of my favorite memories of Uncle Calvin was receiving birthday and Christmas cards from him. He wouldn't just sign a card—he would draw entire scenes on the envelopes. I used to laugh and wonder how many postal workers stopped what they were doing just to admire his artwork as those envelopes made their way through the mail. For my 50th birthday, he even drew a portrait of me, framed it, and sent it to me. It is a gift I will treasure even more now.

One of the last things he said to me was, “The man upstairs has been good to me. I’m just tired. Tell Ron and Rock I love them, and you too. And take care of each other.”

Those words mean so much to me today.

I could go on and on about Uncle Calvin's talents, accomplishments, and wonderful attributes, but I believe his greatest accomplishment was not simply how he lived—it was how he left this life, knowing Jesus and at peace with where he was going.

My deepest condolences and love go out to his children, grandchildren, his sisters and brother who remain, and to every person who knew and loved him.

Uncle Calvin, you lived a long life, a good life, and a life uniquely your own. I thank God for the years we were blessed to have you.

“And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

In the early 2000s, I had the opportunity to meet Rev. Jesse Jackson at NABJ in Chicago.
He had already run for President of the United States, breaking barriers and expanding what many believed was possible. But what stayed with me wasn’t just the history — it was the responsibility in his voice.
“Keep Hope Alive.”
It wasn’t a campaign slogan in that room.
It felt like an assignment.
As young journalists, we were being reminded that our work matters. That our stories matter. That how we show up in rooms where decisions are made matters.
Years later, I carry that charge with me.
In every broadcast.
In every interview.
In every story that requires both truth and compassion.
Hope is not passive. It requires courage. It requires integrity. It requires us to use our platforms wisely.
Meeting him wasn’t just a moment.
It was a reminder that leadership comes with responsibility — and that our voices are meant to build, not just report.
Still keeping hope alive.
