Pssst… I just put a couple of my books (WILDCATS illustrated by Eva Cabrera, and STARFIRE ACADEMY with the incomparable ballerina Misty Copeland) in the tiny free library that the @theworldsboroughbookshop put up outside of P.S. 149 in Jackson Heights, Queens. So go grab em while you can. Happy Latino Heritage Month! 😘 taken in Ps 149 Christa Mcauliffe by @crystalvelasquezauthor

When I was sent to pick up this 7-month-old cutie pie (Martes) from the vet today, I was warned not to be alarmed by his handsomeness. She was right to warn me, because wow. I mean, look at this face! Those eyes! Not even the cone of shame could dim his shine. And he was the sweetest in the car. As always, he is available for fostering and/or adoption. But act fast. I feel like there will be a line forming for him. #nycsecondchancerescue by @crystalvelasquezauthor

Today’s passengers: Repeat customer, Twindle, in her snazzy post-surgery outfit, and Ivy, who guilted me out of ALL my treats with that sweet little face. Inexplicably, these two are still available for adoption, but I’d snatch them up if I were you! #nycsecondchancerescue

*UPDATE: Ivy has been adopted!!! Hooray! 🥰 by @crystalvelasquezauthor

Meet KitKat, a 2-year-old sweetie pie from Georgia who loves to play and gobble up treats. Be careful: She is an aggressive smoocher and will jump to give you hugs and kisses. And yes, she is available for adoption! #nycsecondchancerescue.

*UPDATE: KitKat has been adopted! 🥰🥰🥰 by @crystalvelasquezauthor

You’ve been thinking about adopting a dog. But the adoption fees have held you back. In luck you are! This month the adoption fees at NYC Second Chance Rescue are practically nothing. An adult dog can be yours for only $50, or a puppy for $100. That’s a steal to meet the furry love of your life. ❤️ by @crystalvelasquezauthor

Gotta love when free Broadway tickets fall in your friend’s lap and you get to be the plus one! Great show. Thanks, Kanova! taken in New York, New York by @crystalvelasquezauthor

If my building let me have pets, I would adopt Kratos. What a total sweetie pie! He’s very generous with the kisses and is so good in the car. He didn’t even let the cone of shame stop him from enjoying some treats on the way to his new foster home. #nycsecondchancerescue by @crystalvelasquezauthor

Jade is not a big fan of other dogs—not even fake two-dimensional ones. But she probably would be your biggest fan if you wanted to adopt her! #nycsecondchancerescue by @crystalvelasquezauthor

Time for the year-end review highlights: 1. I bought a new (to me) car! Technically, this happened last year since I got her in December 2024, but we have had a lovely first year together. 2. I started volunteering at NYC Second Chance Rescue. That started Dec. 2024 too, but it took up a lot of this year. 3. I got to go to the Blue Note jazz club for the first time to see the Harlem Gospel Choir perform. 4. I was there to bid my friend’s dog Brando a fond farewell as he crossed the rainbow bridge. (Miss you, Mr. B.) 5. My friend Lisabell adopted Fairy from the rescue after I met her at an adoption event. 🥰 6. Lisabell then gifted me a ticket to see the Cowboy Carter concert. 7. I attended the Puerto Rican Day Parade. 8. Attended the No Kings protest. 9. Saw some Broadway shows (Betty Boop, Marjorie Prime, Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending). 10. Voted for our new mayor, Zohran Mamdani. 11. My book Wildcats came out, and I finished working on the sequel. Also wrote two other books. 12. Took my cousin Alondra to her first ever Broadway show. 13. Visited friends in Maine again. 14. Sold my books at a dog adoption event. 15. A short story I wrote about my grandmother in Ricanstruction: Reminiscing and Rebuilding Puerto Rico went on display in the NYPL’s Wepa! Puerto Ricans in the World of Comics exhibit. 16. I manned a table for the first time at NY Comic Con and sold lots of books. 17. I finally went to Rolo’s for the first time and got to see why Jeremy Allen White says it’s his favorite restaurant. 18. I went to London for work. 19. I went to Ireland for fun. 20. Not pictured: Rest in Peace to my cousin Tara’s son, Justin. May cancer one day be a thing of the past. 💙

I fell and twisted my ankle, and it is super swollen now, so I’ll be hobbling into the new year. But I wish you all a Happy New Year. May it bring you health, happiness, love, success—and maybe a new puppy. by @crystalvelasquezauthor

Andrew here is 3 years old and sweet as pie. Car rides make him kind of nervous, but I bet he’d be more relaxed if you would foster or adopt him. #nycsecondchancerescue by @crystalvelasquezauthor
