"Sea City Clam Tower" is a sound installation I collaborated on with Benjamin Hodges (@tabletchairwall). It is part of the Art Macao Biennale 2021. Continuing from our previous sound installation "Mountain Surrounded by Sea," completed in 2020, it explores the ongoing development of land reclamation in Macao and its impact on the city and the environment.

The sound piece created by me consists of field recordings from a crowded dim sum restaurant, an aquarium, an out-of-tune piano, bus announcements in the four languages used in Macao, eerie sounds created from different instruments, and environmental sounds. The sound is amplified by attaching transducers to styrofoam containers that were collected from a fresh market.

We attempted to reconstruct a seafood restaurant setting with tiled walls, glass tanks used for showcasing freshly caught seafood, air pumps, used large blue barrels, and styrofoam containers. We also created a 3D animation of a building construction which is projected onto oyster shells we collected from the rocky coast at Hac Sa beach. This projection serves as a reflection of Macao's transformation from an oyster farming village to a cosmopolitan mega-casino resort travel destination. Additionally, we projected another 3D animation of seafood onto the styrofoam containers, evoking memories of the freshly caught fish stored by fishermen as they transport their catch from boat to shore, and eventually to fish markets and seafood restaurants.

The seafood restaurant was illuminated with a red light, while the fish tanks were lit with bright white light tinged with blue. With time, aided by the fish tank light, the oyster shells developed a green layer of diatoms, a type of algae which caused the fish tank to turn green. This organic transformation showcased the lively multispecies relationships inhabiting the tanks no matter how invisible they may be.

In the fish tanks, we included oyster shells that were locally sourced in Macao Hac Sa Beach. The fish tanks and the metal frames were customized by a local glass shop that specialize in making fish tanks for local seafood restaurants. The oyster shells eventually grew micro species on their surface and turn the water to green. #seacityclamtower 🌊 🦪 🦠🧫 #bioart #svabioart #bioartlab #sva #svawesome #fishtank #oysters #oystershell #oystershellart #soundart #installationart #soundinstallation #biologicalart #seafoodrestaurant #macauartist #macaoartist #microspecies #seawater #海市蜃樓 #蜃気楼 #聲音裝置 #聲音藝術 #生物藝術 #澳門藝術家 #裝置藝術 #聲音裝置 #視覺藝術學院 #紐約視覺藝術學院 #魚缸 #蠔殼 taken in School of Visual Arts by @crystalwmchan

When I was pregnant, I watched a Spanish short film that ended with the words, “… and my life from now on is two lives.”

My baby and I are inseparable. Occasionally, I leave to teach or go to yoga class. Besides that, we are always together, day and night.

Sometimes I dream of the time and space I once had, and I look forward to the day she goes to school so I can have that time and space again.

But then I realize, I want her company as much as she wants mine. Her hugs are so reassuring. Her smile is so magical. Her curiosity and confidence show me how to find joy in every little moment.

Thank you for painting with me, Gisela. Your intuitive and expressive touch transform my painting and my world.

I’m working on a new painting for an upcoming group exhibition. I hired an assistant and she made good contributions. She is intuitive and expressive. She inspires me in so many ways.

Lately, my daughter seems only know how to say baba and basically stops saying mama. I can only assume that’s part of the development and it’s temporary. ❤️‍🩹
