We're sharing some highlights from this school year this week!

Kate Kelleher from the WCU Neuro Clinic at Biltmore Park partnered with the aphasia community, PechaKucha Asheville, and Story Parlor to put on an Aphasia Story Night! Jacqueline, Emily, and Caroline were student clinicians that were pivotal in making this event happen!

Pictures 1-2: Two out of the four amazing, brave, and engaging people with aphasia told a picture-supported story. They are now available on YouTube. Link in bio.

Picture 3: Three students, Jacqueline, Caroline & Emily introduced the topic of aphasia and talked about the life participation approach of our Asheville clinic.

Picture 4: Jessica Martin, RN and co-facilitator of the WNC Aphasia Support Group braved the Battle deck and told a spontaneous story with sight-unseen pictures.

Picture 5-6: Kate and some of the amazing PechaKucha Team making it all possible! by @csdatwcu

What a great couple of days at Cullowhee Conference! We learned about coaching from Dr. Ciera Lorio and supervision/ethics from Dr. Kia Johnson. Student clinician Becky Pechmann even provided an introduction for Dr. Johnson. Thanks all for attending!!! @kianoelle1908 by @csdatwcu

Last week amazing undergraduate student Jada Wong presented her research at NBASLH. Jada was selected as one of two people to receive the prestigious Legacy Project / Passing the Torch recognition. The torch is passed to a person from the younger generation who embodies the values of NBASLH and shows promise as a student leader. We couldn’t be prouder of Jada’s hard work! Congratulations, Jada! by @csdatwcu

WNC.

Within the second year AAC course, the students welcomed Mateo Moreno as a guest speaker to share his lived experiences as an AAC user. Mateo expressed his journey, feelings, and current aspirations as an individual who uses AAC to communicate. He shared with our second years, who are soon future Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), on how to best advocate and communicate for and with AAC users. Mateo is a multinational public speaker who enjoys speaking with others. He also enjoys riding trains and is an avid sports fan, particularly baseball, and has been to almost all baseball fields in the US! Recently, Mateo just finished presenting at the Communication First Conference in Europe, where he took up the opportunity to ride Europe’s trains. We all are a bit jealous of that trip here!

Thank you Mateo for speaking with our second years about your experiences, your advice, and answering the thoughtful questions presented.

Another thanks to Mateo’s father, who shared his own experience through a parental lens.

Mateo is one of many AAC users who share their knowledge and experience with the public through @USAAC Speaker Connection.
