For those interested in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), we're sharing details about an upcoming event in Savannah focused on AAC implementation, caregiver education, and collaboration across service settings.

ableU Live & Local – Savannah: AAC in Action will be held on Thursday, November 5, from 6:00–8:00 PM at Hop Atomica in Savannah.

This free, in-person event will feature a panel of SLPs and a parent of an AAC device user discussing practical strategies for AAC implementation, parent training, carryover into daily routines, and interdisciplinary collaboration across settings. Food and refreshments will be provided, and 0.1 ASHA CEUs are available.

We are having the BEST time learning, growing, and putting our knowledge into practice! Our students are gaining valuable hands-on experience by planning and facilitating early language and literacy groups for Pre-K children as part of our Early Language Disorders coursework. 📚We are so thankful for our community partners who make these meaningful learning experiences possible and help us make a difference in the lives of young learners!

As we close out another semester, we're celebrating the growth of our graduate student clinicians!

This semester, our SLP students sharpened their clinical skills in the Clinical Simulation Lab, applying classroom knowledge in hands-on, simulated experiences. These opportunities helped build the clinical competencies, critical thinking, and confidence needed to provide exceptional care.

We're proud of all they accomplished this semester and excited to see what's next for these future SLPs!

Happy National Handshake Day! 🤝

When you think of speech therapy, you probably think of talking. But communication starts long before we ever say a word! Human interaction is heavily driven by body language and social pragmatics. In fact, a basic handshake says a lot all at once:
👁️ Eye contact: It says, "Hey, I see you!" and locks in a connection.
📏 Social space: It bridges physical distance respectfully without overstepping personal boundaries.
✋ Gestures & Body language: It shows warmth and confidence before you even speak.

Mastering these non-verbal cues can be a big part of the speech therapy journey. From practicing a job interview greeting to reading a peer's cues on the playground, social communication is a foundational life skill!

💡 Did you know? Research shows that when someone's words don't match their body language, people trust the nonverbal cues 55% of the time!

The good news is that we can help!

While many people know SPEAK OUT!® therapy for improving speech and voice, the program's focus on intentional speech also supports the strength, coordination, and awareness needed for safe swallowing. Maintaining strong swallow function is critical for nutrition, hydration, and reducing the risk of aspiration.
