What do you do what you have 4 boys with boundless energy and an obsession with sports? Build them an in-house, professional-grade sports performance facility, of course. This was such a fun build as a strength & conditioning coach and former athlete. @keiserfitness functional trainer is a staple piece in any baseball training space, with the pneumatics providing constant resistance at any force, developing explosive power, especially in the rotational plane. The @vertimax platform is a top of the line development tool for vertical jump (all jumps, really). The @roguefitness rack is a show stopper with its own little power lifting alcove. And, of course, you’ve got to rep the local high school @yorkdukesfootball with the deadlift platform. The adjacent recovery space with a dry sauna, red light panel, and cold plunge is the cherry on top of this beautiful gym. What a fun project! These clients reached out to me to redesign and outfit the dedicated basement gym space in their beautiful new home in Winnetka (quite the basement!). The catch was that it needed to be completed before their move-in date, so that they wouldn’t miss any workouts. That’s my kind of client! Only after a couple weeks did both parties realize that they were actually personal training clients of mine from nearly 2 decades ago! Small world! Luckily, that meant I knew exactly what type of exercise they like to engage in. This is a great example of the turnkey services that we offer. We were able to conceptualize, design, and get approval; then, procure, store, and personally deliver and install equipment, all without requiring the client’s presence. It was such a pleasure working with @emilymsturgess to bring these new Winnetka homeowners this show-stopper of a gym. We overhauled the space, replacing carpet with sound and vibration attenuating flooring and installing custom mirroring, while stocking it with extremely high quality and aesthetically pleasing equipment. What do you do when you have a massive sprawling attic, no time to get to the gym, and a bunch of wild animals to look after? Create a gym / playroom space where everyone in the family can be active together! Projects like these are more complicated than you might think, as the floor joists and ceilings required reinforcement to handle swinging kids, loaded barbells, and a 631 lb functional trainer. The climbing wall was built from scratch. Carpet was removed to make way for new, premium quality rubber flooring. All in all, a ton of work went into making this space possible and our partners @lmbuildarch were essential. TRANSFORMATION. This basement gym was originally outfitted by a typical commercial gym supplier, who packed the space with as much high-margin equipment as they could with no care for the gym’s functionality. It wasn’t long before the homeowner came to us frustrated with how the space was operating. With simply a more thoughtful approach to equipping the space, we were able to achieve the goal of creating a gym our client loves spending time in. At CS Design, we manage every phase of the gym development process—from concept and design through construction, equipment sourcing, delivery, and installation—creating a seamless experience for our clients. Had to work up an appetite for construction before converting this Elmhurst basement carpentry workshop into a CrossFit-forward gym space. Dealing with a condensed floor plan and zero windows, we had to get creative with layout and design. First, we installed brick paneling on opposing walls, matching the house’s exterior walls, giving the illusion that the space is above grade. Then, we inserted bucket lighting with directionality, to avoid the harsh straight-down lighting you’ll often find in a basement. We also utilized the recessed elevated wall for LED uplighting that can add a window-like element to the ambiance. Finally, the other two opposing walls were outfitted with monochromatic slat paneling to attenuate sound. For the equipment profile, we largely went with a selection of @roguefitness and @assaultfitness items, as the clients are CrossFit and HIIT enthusiasts. The fact that all cardio machines are on wheels and do not require being plugged in helps the versatility of the room, with everything able to be moved to suit that day’s workout. These Elmhurst clients had a basement gym that was mixed in with their laundry room, storage, HVAC system, and water heater. Due to the chaotic environment, the gym was rarely used. Our directive was to beautify the space and add functionality to an already well-outfitted gym. We overhauled the layout, added a slatted wall with disappearing doors, reworked the lighting, painted the walls and ceiling, installed new rubber flooring and mirroring, supplemented the workout equipment with some missing pieces, and - finally - set up a gorgeous infrared sauna. Annnnnnnnd now… standing 91 inches tall, in the North Park neighborhood, YOUR Chicago basement gym! This gym was crafted out of half of a huge unfinished basement space. The full-scale build included creating the space, then filing it with illuminating features that make you forget you’re working out underground. The clients wanted a split space that would allow each of them to practice their own particular brand of fitness — one a weightlifter, in need of a full scale rack, custom lifting platform, and a plethora of free weights; and, one that enjoys cardio-based training, mixed in with some yoga.
