ATTENTION!!🚨 ATTENTION!!🚨

Our winter 2026-2027 applications are open for Engage, Learn, and Challenge Colonial Narratives: A Transformative Journey in Ghana, West Africa!🔊

Don't just dream about making a difference – come do it. Let's go to Ghana!

Join us for a deeply immersive learning experience that goes beyond traditional tourism to explore Ghana's rich heritage, contemporary realities, and resilient communities. This 21-day journey invites you to critically examine global power structures while engaging meaningfully with local changemakers and grassroots initiatives.

Throughout these 21 days across four regions, we'll engage with diverse languages, cultures, and worldviews. This isn't about observing from a distance – it's about learning to be accountable allies and understanding our own positionality in global systems of power. We'll explore community-led development initiatives that challenge Western aid models, youth movements reshaping Ghana's future on their own terms, Indigenous knowledge systems and local artistic expressions as forms of cultural preservation and resistance.

This program challenges participants to move beyond surface-level education abroad to engage with complex questions about power, privilege, and partnership. Together, we'll learn how to support community-driven change while critically examining our own roles in global systems. Join us in this journey of unlearning, relearning, and collective growth.

*Note: This program was developed in partnership with Ghanaian community leaders and educators, centering local voices and perspectives throughout the experience.

Ready to jump in? Attend Our First Interest meeting🗓.

A unique benefit of choosing to major or minor in the Department of Race, Gender, and Ethnic Studies are the robust opportunities for immersive education outside of the typical classroom setting.

With this necessity in mind, associate professor, Dr. Caridad Souza has continued to lead a new cohort of students each year to study abroad in the Republic of Ghana, West Africa over winter break. This enriching experience has provided our students with unique cultural opportunities, as well as expanding their knowledges of community engagement and decentering Western worldviews that often make it difficult to truly embrace the broader global community.

Please join us on April 4th from 2pm to 4pm for Gifts From Ghana, a special event that will showcase stories, dance, and food from this year's Ghana Community Engagement Project.

*Please RSVP using the QR code on the flyer. Hoffert Learning Center of the Gregory Allcar Museum", "University Center for the Arts 1400 Remington St. Fort Collins, CO 80524", "RSVP here" with a red arrow pointing to a QR code below. by @csu_etst

In Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom, the beloved ancestor bell hooks states, “I came to theory because I was hurting—the pain within me was so intense that I could not go on living. I came to theory desperate, wanting to comprehend—to grasp what was happening around and within me. Most importantly, I wanted to make the hurt go away. I saw in theory then a location for healing.”❤️.

Please join the Department of Race, Gender, and Ethnic Studies on Wednesday March 25th for a Town Hall style meeting that furthers the notion that education is a practice of freedom and pathway to healing, as well as to discuss why race and gender still matter in our discipline and beyond❤️.

*Note: Light refreshments will be available on a first come, first served basis😊.
