Regena Cummings Cole (June 26, 1927–May 14, 2026) was born in Prescott, Arkansas and moved to Long Beach in the early 1950’s. After a 27-year career with Pacific Mutual Life Insurance, she and her husband, Robert “Bob” Cole, built a successful real estate portfolio and shared a love of travel, visiting every continent except Antarctica. As they began thinking about their legacy, they began plans to support the study of music, as Bob had played piano most of his life. Following Bob’s passing in 2004, Regena became the driving force behind establishing the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach.

Their endowment has and will continue to support scholarships for music students. In 2015, Robert and Regena Cole were awarded honorary doctorates by CSULB in recognition of their extraordinary philanthropy and lasting impact. Dr. Aaron Fruchtman, faculty member from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, led a group of students on an extraordinary adventure last month in a 19-day study abroad course in Florence and Rome, Italy. This immersive program focused on Italian composers and artists from antiquity to the present, and the group toured historical sites, museums, and attended concerts.

�Aaron's insights on this interdisciplinary experience:
"Our first week in Florence was packed with unforgettable experiences. Students began with a guided walking tour of Florence’s historic city center, learning how the city’s art, architecture, and civic history shaped the Renaissance. We visited the Accademia Gallery to see Michelangelo’s iconic David up close and later explored the Bargello Museum, home to Donatello’s groundbreaking bronze David and other Renaissance masterpieces. Music has been at the center of our experience as well. Students attended a Vivaldi concert at the Zeffirelli Museum, hearing Baroque music performed in an intimate historic setting. We also climbed to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, where we attended Vespers and listened to Gregorian chant.

"Our second week focused heavily on the heart of Florence and the complex surrounding the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Students visited Palazzo Vecchio, climbed Brunelleschi’s famous dome and Giotto’s Bell Tower, explored the Baptistery and its celebrated mosaics, toured the cathedral's interior, and descended into the remains of the earlier Basilica of Santa Reparata. Our studies culminated with a visit to the Opera del Duomo Museum, where students encountered many of the original sculptures and artworks created for the cathedral complex.

From Renaissance architecture and masterpieces of visual art to opera, film, and even the intersection of music and automotive history, students continue to discover the many ways culture, creativity, and history intersect throughout Italy." by @csulb_bccm

Regena Cummings Cole

1927–2026

For many years, Regena Cummings Cole and her late husband, Bob Cole, were friends and supporters of California State University, Long Beach. In 2008, Regena honored Bob's legacy with the transformational gift that established the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, ensuring their shared love of music and commitment to Long Beach would continue to inspire generations of students

As we remember Regena, who recently passed away, we celebrate her life today, on what would have been her 99th birthday, and reflect on the remarkable legacy she leaves behind.

Regena was Bob's partner in every sense of the word. Together they built Bob Cole Realty into one of Long Beach's most respected real estate firms, working side by side for more than three decades. Bob often credited Regena as an essential part of the company's success, recognizing her insight, dedication, and steady partnership.

Music was at the heart of their family life. Bob was an avid pianist, and together they believed that talented students from every background should have access to an exceptional music education. Before Bob's passing in 2004, the couple discussed how they could best give back to the community that had given them so much. Their answer paved the way for the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, a place where generations of students will be able to continue to hone their abilities, pursue their dreams, and share their talents with the world—all thanks to the vision and generosity of Bob and Regena Cole. taken in California State University, Long Beach by @csulb_bccm

What a way to end the year with a performance at @carnegiehall 🎵✨

The Bob Cole Chamber Choir and University Choir concluded the season with a trip to New York City to perform @lyonhazzard ’s Finding Light at Carnegie Hall alongside choirs from across the country.

Congratulations to all of our singers on an incredible performance, and thank you to the ensembles who shared the stage with us. We are grateful to have been part of such a memorable performance and to close out the year in such an iconic venue.
