The CLA Monday memo team recognized Jonathan Ocon in his most recent effforts!

Four CLA faculty members joined the CSU Learning Innovation for Future-Forward Teaching (LIFT) initiative, a program supporting teaching innovations for 21st-century work and life.

Jonathan Ocón, Aparna Nayak, Richard Marcus and Guido Urizar are among 45 project teams embedding durable skills in undergraduate coursework.

"Geography at Work", led by Ocón, assistant professor of Geography, is building a department-wide framework to help students name the career-relevant skills already in their coursework: GIS analysis, fieldwork, planning reports and community-engaged research. Ocón says students won't notice much difference in the classroom, but that's intentional.

"We are not replacing the kinds of projects our students already complete," he said. "Instead, we will add structured opportunities for students to reflect on what they learned through those projects and practice translating that experience into language they can use outside the classroom."

After a GIS analysis or field assignment, students might be asked to identify the skills they practiced and how they would explain that experience to an employer or graduate program. Ocón is working with co-principal investigators Mystyn Mills, Christine Jocoy and Suzanne Perlitsh, along with an advisory group of Career Development Center staff and geography alumni.

"This project is not about adding another requirement to the major," he said. "It is about making visible something that is already happening."

Nayak’s project helps students articulate the global competencies and cultural literacy gained through language study.

It will develop modules for Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish on topics such as media literacy, climate change and food culture. Students will build critical thinking and adaptability by comparing cultural perspectives and applying language skills to real-world scenarios.

Nayak is working with Alex Bakke and María Sánchez-Reyes to coordinate testing for 250 students at no cost. The awardees will share progress and resources through a CSU community of practice.

The Department of Geography at California State University, Long Beach is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our recent graduate, Samuel King, whose work has been featured in Just Rural Futures, the publication of the American Association of Geographers' Rural Geography Specialty Group.

In his article, "When Aid Leaves the Village: Rural Zambia, USAID Withdrawal, and the Geography of Loss," Samuel examines the far-reaching impacts of international aid withdrawal on rural communities in Zambia. Through a geographic lens, he explores how the loss of development assistance reshapes local livelihoods, access to services, and community resilience, highlighting the human dimensions of global policy decisions. His work demonstrates the power of geography to illuminate complex social, political, and economic processes that affect vulnerable populations around the world.

Samuel's publication is a testament to the critical thinking, research skills, and global perspective he developed during his time at CSULB. We are incredibly proud to see one of our graduates contributing meaningful insights to important conversations within the field of geography and rural studies.

Congratulations, Samuel, on this outstanding achievement. We look forward to following your future endeavors and cannot wait to see the impact your work will continue to make in the years ahead.
