Our 2027 SLP graduate students are officially over halfway through their summer semester!

Over the past several weeks, theyโ€™ve been diving into the assessment and treatment of dysphagia (swallowing disorders) and recently had the opportunity to visit the CSULB School of Nursingโ€™s mock hospital room to gain hands-on experience with equipment commonly found in medical settings.

A special thank you to the CSULB School of Nursing for welcoming our students and partnering with us in preparing the next generation of speech-language pathologists!

Renee Hau, a senior majoring in Speech-Language Pathology with a minor in Gerontology, was selected to participate in the NYU Summer Health Academic Research Experience in Communication Sciences and Disorders (SHARE-CSD), a six-week summer research program hosted at New York University (NYU). The program provides undergraduate students interested in speech-language pathology, audiology, neuroscience, and linguistics with hands-on research experience and mentorship.

As a member of the Acoustics, Phonetics, and Perception Lab (APPLab), Renee worked on research examining the intelligibility and speech comprehension of unfamiliar accents. She pilot-tested experiments, explored different methods of measuring intelligibility, learned to code in R, and analyzed large datasets. Renee also attended workshops focused on graduate school, clinical practice, research, and cultural responsiveness.

Renee is passionate about medical speech-language pathology, supporting bilingualism in clinical practice, and engaging in research across diverse areas of communication sciences and disorders. We are proud of Renee and all of our students as they continue to shine beyond CSULB through their outstanding accomplishments.

Teresa Do, a senior majoring in Speech-Language Pathology with a minor in Linguistics, was selected to participate in SHARE-CSD (Summer Health Academic Research Experience in Communicative Sciences and Disorders), a six-week summer research program hosted at New York University (NYU) for undergraduate students interested in speech-language pathology, audiology, neuroscience, and linguistics.

During the program, she worked on a research project examining how preschool-aged children learn new emotion words through eye gaze. Through this experience, Teresa learned how to read and analyze research articles, code eye-tracking data, present research at a symposium, and communicate scientific findings to others. She also participated in workshops and discussions on topics such as neurodiversity, cultural competence, and bias in research and clinical practice.

Teresa hopes to one day become a school-based speech-language pathologist specializing in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). We are proud of Teresa and all of our students as they continue to shine beyond CSULB through their outstanding accomplishments. by @csulbslp

๐Ÿ’™ Five students from the Department of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology at Chung Shan Medical University
๐Ÿ’› One student from the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at Asia University

For one month, these Taiwanese students joined the CSULB SLP Class of 2026, participating in graduate seminars and rotating through three different clinic sections each afternoon. Together, they learned, collaborated, and provided support to clients while experiencing graduate education and clinical training in Southern California.

This exchange reminds us that learning knows no borders. It has been an incredible opportunity for students from different programs and cultures to grow together, support clients together, and enjoy the diverse and vibrant SoCal lifestyle together.

Although we spent only one month together, the friendships, professional connections, and memories we've made will last for years to come. ๐Ÿ’™
