Best of 2025

Every year keeps getting better, and I’m honestly not sure how I top this one. A lot of work went into this year and I’m grateful for everyone who supported it along the way. I hit my goal of 10k in 2025, which still feels wild, and there’s a lot more coming. Big plans for 2026, YouTube might be making a comeback. by @ctbandos

Seasons of Seaside Sanatorium
-
Built in the 1930s along Long Island Sound, this complex was designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert as a tuberculosis sanatorium, using fresh air and sunlight as treatment. As medicine advanced, its purpose changed, later serving as a geriatric hospital and state care facility until closing in 1996. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Seaside has remained abandoned for decades as plans to preserve or demolish the buildings continue to stall. taken in Seaside Sanatorium by @ctbandos

Summiting Vihren, Bulgaria’s second highest peak (2,914m / 9,560ft) ⛰️

Pictures from summiting Vihren as well as walking the famous Koncheto ridge between Kutelo (2,908m) and Banski Suhodol Peak (2,884m). We slept at the Koncheto shelter and descended towards Vihren Chalet in the morning, taking Bulgaria’s historic narrow gauge train back towards Sofia. One of the best times of my life, all thanks to @cortical_dysplasia

A long-form video of my experience will be posted to YouTube this weekend, stay tuned! taken in Vihren by @ctbandos

The Red Lion Hotel

Built in 1968 as the Lord Cromwell Motor Inn, this 12 acre property underwent many identities over the decades, later operating as a Radisson and a Crowne Plaza. In its prime, it hosted massive statewide conventions, grand ballroom events, and served as a premier stop for travelers right off I-91.

Its downfall came overnight. On the morning of January 10, 2020, the state abruptly suspended the hotel’s tax permit due to nonpayment, forcing over 100 unsuspecting guests to pack their bags and evacuate immediately.

With everything left behind, the “infamous dome hotel” quickly fell into extreme decay, turning into a magnet for urban explorers, mold, and heavy vandalism. Now, backed by a $3 million state grant, crews have started demolition for a new mixed use development appropriately named “The Lord Cromwell.” taken in Cromwell, Connecticut by @ctbandos

The Old Bishop House (also known as the Piontkowski House) in Old Saybrook was demolished on September 4th, 2026. A devastating loss for Connecticut history and cult cinema.

Built in the late 1870s as a farmhouse, the estate was transformed at the turn of the century by Hartford businessman J.P. Newton, who added its unforgettable four story Victorian tower and named it “Fairview Farm.” During the Great Depression, it was bought by the Piontkowski family, who operated the land for generations and even used the 13 room home to house immigrant workers during WWII.

This was also a piece of cinematic history. The house served as the centerpiece for the 1971 psychological cult classic Let’s Scare Jessica to Death. While it sat abandoned and decaying for decades, that iconic tower looking over the highway was a beloved local landmark. Rest in peace to an OG spot. taken in Old Saybrook, Connecticut by @ctbandos

Untouched Cold War bunker abandoned somewhere in Hungary.

This multi level civil defense shelter was constructed in the 1950s during the hardline communist regime of Mátyás Rákosi. Built directly inside a major industrial area, its purpose was to protect workers and maintain operations during a potential chemical or nuclear strike. Heavy industrial zones like this were considered primary military targets for Western forces seeking to disrupt the Eastern Bloc’s supply chains and production capabilities.

Inside, the facility remains stocked with its original equipment. Hundreds of unused Hungarian 75M gas masks sit undisturbed in their original wooden crates alongside rubber anti-contamination suits. Civil defense diagrams detail the destructive zones of a nuclear strike and shockwave blast radius calculations, a true time capsule from the height of Soviet-era paranoia. taken in Hungary by @ctbandos

100 year old premium tobacco facility turned communist food chemistry lab 🏛️🧪

This absolute masterpiece of 1920s architecture was originally built a century ago as a research facility for premium tobacco. Decades later, the regime turned it into a massive food chemistry institute where the country’s top scientists developed new technologies.

The property was tied to one of the biggest political corruption scandals in Romania. The land was illegally sold off for cheap, sparking a massive criminal trial that ended with high profile prison sentences and the government seizing the property. Trapped in a legal black hole, it has been completely abandoned for years.

I took these pictures in 10 minutes, was chased out by a large shirtless man, who said nothing and started running towards me. taken in Romania by @ctbandos

The Buzludzha Monument 🛸

4,600 feet up in the Balkan Mountains sits Buzludzha, a massive concrete “flying saucer” that served as the grand arena for the Bulgarian Communist Party. It took 7 years, 70,000 tons of concrete and the labor of over 6,000 soldiers and artists to complete in 1981. It was only used for 8 years, when the regime collapsed in 1989 the doors were locked and it has been abandoned ever since.

This is one of the most well known abandoned brutalist buildings in Europe. The outside has its iconic dystopian UFO look unlike any other building on Earth, while the inside was lined with beautiful communist mosaics and the hammer and sickle centered inside the cathedral dome.

Today, many projects have come and gone to try and restore the monument. Right now, the inside is lined with tarps and 2x4s seemingly holding it together. A massive preservation project officially started just a week after I visited, with an estimated timeline of 36 months to secure the structure. I made it just in time to see it in its abandoned state. taken in Buzludzha-Бузлуджа by @ctbandos

Built in 1889, this massive factory was once the result of a pioneer inventor, with hundreds of workers making precision steel instruments. It sat silent for decades after closing down in the 1980s, until a fire completely gutted the main five-story building. Now, it’s just ruins brick, ash, and graffiti, as the beauty of nature slowly takes over. by @ctbandos

Abandoned powerhouse surrounded by a neighborhood. 🏭

Built above a narrow industrial waterway, this small powerhouse once supplied steam and electricity to a much larger factory complex.

Constructed during the late 1800s, the building served as the heart of an industrial campus, providing power to nearby shops and production floors for decades. Today, it survives as one of the last remnants of a forgotten industry, hidden among the homes and streets that slowly grew around it. taken in Connecticut by @ctbandos

Abandoned 1910s bowling alley.

Hidden inside a former estate building sits a two-lane bowling alley, a squash court, and rooms that once entertained some of the wealthiest people in America.

Over a century later, much of it still remains exactly as it was. taken in New England by @ctbandos
