Absolutely love this photograph of wheelchairdancr and @worldsoflaurel! ❤️It was so much fun to work with @kineticlightdance in the studio. So grateful that I could capture this stage of the process and so excited to see how it develops! Big thanks to @codebuesing for setting up lighting and throwing feathers! 🪽🪽🪽

We love sharing new pics with you 🤩🤩

Here’s a moment from our latest work “The Next T.i.M.es” — currently in development!

ID: Laurel Lawson lies on their back and lift Alice Sheppard from below with one leg. Alice lifts her curved arms high and tips her face up, she smiles with a joyful open mouth as white feathers float delicately through the air and settle around both of them. Laurel is a freckled white person with short cut brown hair; Alice is a multiracial black woman with coffee-colored skin and short curly blonde hair. Their metallic bodysuits glint blue-toned rainbows. Photo by Cherylynn Tsushima @ctsushima by @ctsushima

Made it in the "Fashion Trends of Gala 2022" @jacobspillow blog post with my new teal suit captured in the moment with this amazing photo by @ctsushima ! That was the first night in a while where I danced the night away til my feet couldn't dance anymore. Heart pounding, sore feet, and a huge smile on my face, taking in all the seratonin. Shout out to my amazing stylist and long time friend, @brookshines_

Every Tuesday of this month, I’ve tuned in to see the release of a new Commercial for Humanity from @amalgamatedance. Each dance film is in support of a different nonprofit organization and it has been so amazing to see how the choreography and storytelling connect to their values. So impressed with @cbbuesing and @_std_ of @rethinkfilms for filming and editing these beautiful dance films and feeling so lucky that I was able to photograph the gorgeous dancers! Just finished listening to 1619, a podcast from the New York Times, which was a great companion to Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Though one is nonfiction and the other fiction, they connected to each other in so many ways. I finished Homegoing a few days ago and I’m still thinking about the luminous writing. It was so good that I wished that each chapter was its own novel so that I could dive deeper into each of the characters. by @ctsushima

NYC friends - you can request your Absentee Ballot for the Primary Election on June 23 at nycabsentee.com. The Board of Elections needs to receive your application by June 16th so there is still time to request your ballot. It should only take a few minutes to apply online. Also, if it says “Record Not Found” call 1-866-VOTE-NYC (I never got an email response from AbsenteeJune2020@boe.nyc). There was a clerical error in my info but after calling I was able to get is sorted out and request my ballot. by @ctsushima

In 2017, I choreographed and began work on a piece called Black Being. In 2018, I added onto this work, I still think of this as a work in progress, but I'd like to share the 2017 version today. .
This first iteration was called Black Being: New Creation Replica. This work came at a pivotal spot in my life, I was grappling heavily with my identity as a Christian and my identity as a Black woman and how those two coincide. I explored themes of being 'born again' and what that meant for me as Black woman. How do I become a new creation, when I am cast into a societal role as soon as I exit the womb? What creation am I being encouraged to become? I struggled with white supremacy attached to a lot of church culture, specifically in my own experience. People like me weren't represented in leadership, in music, were not given credit, were left out of sermons. My cultural experience was misunderstood, mishandled, or simply never mentioned. I cannot separate my Blackness, and wouldn't want to, and I wanted to make that statement in the work.
.
I challenge you to watch this iteration of the work when you're able to, and reflect.
I hope that even when this historic moment passes, the work of listening, researching, discussion, policy change, and everyday activism continue to drive the hearts of people in this country. Black lives matter.
.
You can watch this full piece in my bio [@dance2deliver].

Here are three lessons I learned from my first attempt at dalgona coffee:
1️⃣ Starbucks Via instant coffee doesn’t really work.
2️⃣ I should probably invest in an electric hand mixer.
3️⃣ 1 and 2 don’t actually matter because even though it didn’t come out very fluffy it was still pretty delicious. taken in Bedford-Stuyvesant by @ctsushima
