A lot of coaches would pass on this athlete.

Her 60m time is outstanding, but her 100m and 200m times aren’t where you’d expect them to be.

Would I recruit her?

Absolutely.

Why? Because I’m not recruiting a spreadsheet. I’m recruiting potential.

At Edinboro, I’m looking for female sprinters who can explode out of the blocks, accelerate well, and fit the culture we’re building. An elite 60m time tells me there’s plenty of speed there. Now it’s our job as coaches to develop the rest.

Sometimes, the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Would you recruit her? 👀

🚨 HIGH SCHOOL TRACK ATHLETES: THE TRANSFER PORTAL CHANGES RECRUITING.

If you’re a senior who hasn’t committed yet, this is your reminder to take control of your recruitment.

When college coaches evaluate their rosters, they may be looking at BOTH high school recruits and experienced college transfers.

That means roster spots, scholarship budgets, and team needs can change.

Here’s what you should be doing RIGHT NOW:

✅ Contacting schools that fit your athletic and academic profile

✅ Sending updated PRs and verified results

✅ Following up with coaches professionally

✅ Keeping your grades strong

✅ Exploring realistic opportunities at every college level

You don’t need to panic because you’re uncommitted.

But you do need a plan.

College coaches: How much does the transfer portal affect your high school recruiting?

Athletes: Have you started reaching out to college programs?

🚨 WOULD YOU RECRUIT THIS ATHLETE? — 400m Edition

You have ONE scholarship spot remaining.

🏃‍♀️ Athlete A
400m: 55.20
200m: 25.10
GPA: 3.1
4 years of experience

🏃‍♀️ Athlete B
400m: 56.05
200m: 24.65
GPA: 3.8
2 years of experience

One has the better 400m time TODAY.

The other has more 200m speed and a different development trajectory.

As a college coach, I can tell you recruiting decisions aren’t always as simple as picking the fastest PR.

Who gets your scholarship — A or B? And WHY?

Hypothetical athlete profiles for discussion.

Media Day 2026 📸

Another season, another opportunity to build something special.

One of the things I’ve learned as a college coach is that building a successful program goes far beyond what happens on the track.

It’s about the people you bring into the program, the culture you establish, and the standards you hold each other to every day.

We’ve put in a lot of work to get to where we are, but there’s still so much more we want to accomplish.

Excited for what’s ahead with this group.

The work continues. 🔴⚫️

Testing week is over. Now the real work begins. 📊⚡️

We just wrapped up our first training block, and the results gave us plenty to be excited about.

But as a coach, I’m not testing athletes just to see who can put up the biggest numbers.

I’m trying to answer questions.

Did we get faster?
Did we get stronger?
Did we become more explosive?
Where are we still falling short?

And most importantly, what adjustments should we make moving forward?

The numbers are only valuable if we use them to make better training decisions.

TEST → TRAIN → RETEST → ADJUST.

Coaches: What’s the most important thing you look for after a testing block?

Athletes: What’s your favorite test?

Things College Coaches Wish Athletes Knew: Your coach can tell. 👀

There’s a difference between having a bad practice and going through the motions.

Every athlete has days when they’re tired, frustrated, or not performing at their best.

That’s normal.

But when you consistently cut corners, rush through drills, or only give effort when someone’s watching, it eventually shows.

You don’t have to be perfect.

You do have to be intentional.

The goal isn’t to win every practice. It’s to get something out of every practice.

Athletes: What’s one practice habit you wish you had developed earlier?

Coaches: What’s one habit you notice immediately?

🚨 JUST BECAUSE WE START EVENT WORK DOESN’T MEAN WE GO FULL APPROACH OR FULL THROWS.

When we start event-specific training, we don’t immediately jump into full approaches in the jumps or full throws in the throwing events.

We go back to the basics. 👇

✅ Drill the fundamentals
✅ Build proper positions
✅ Develop rhythm and timing
✅ Reinforce good technique

Why? Because the basics are the foundation of everything we do.

You can’t expect an athlete to execute a full approach or a full throw consistently if they haven’t mastered the movements that make it successful.

It’s not about doing the most complicated thing as quickly as possible. It’s about building the skills that allow athletes to perform at their best when it matters most.

Build the foundation first. The big performances will follow. 💪

Coaches, are you spending enough time on the basics with your athletes?

Athletes, trust the process. The little things make the biggest difference. 👊

🚨 HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES: IT’S OKAY TO HAVE A PRIVATE COACH!

Let’s clear something up… getting coaching outside of your high school program is NOT a bad thing. 👇

If you want to get faster, improve your technique, or develop in your event, working with a private coach can be a great way to invest in yourself.

But here’s what matters:
✅ Respect your high school coach.
✅ Communicate with both coaches.
✅ Make sure everyone is working toward the same goal: YOUR DEVELOPMENT.

The best athletes are always looking for ways to improve. There’s nothing wrong with getting extra help as long as you’re doing it for the right reasons.

Remember: It’s not about choosing sides. It’s about becoming the best athlete you can be. 💯

👇 ATHLETES & PARENTS: Do you think high school athletes should be allowed to work with private coaches? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

Talent doesn’t automatically make someone easy to coach.

I’ve worked with athletes at all different ability levels, and one thing I’ve learned is that being coachable matters.

You don’t have to be perfect.

You don’t have to understand every drill immediately.

You don’t even have to agree with every correction without asking questions.

But you do have to be willing to listen, communicate, and make adjustments.

Some of the best athletes to work with aren’t the ones who get everything right.

They’re the ones who genuinely want to get better.

Athletes: What’s the best coaching advice you’ve ever received?

Coaches: What’s one quality every coachable athlete has?
