☄️ANNOUNCING: “The Tropics, The Moon and Mars,” a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based Brazilian artist Mari Nagem.

Join us at CUE next Saturday, July 11th, 3–6 pm, for the opening reception, presented as part of West Side Fest, with music by Fernanda Steinmann, bites by Brigadeiro Bakery, and a custom cocktail supported by Cappelletti. 🏖️

In a new immersive installation, Nagem constructs a post-natural tropical environment in which heat reorganizes relationships between bodies, technologies, geological formations, and living systems. The tropics appear as climate, home, and projection: a lived geography shaped by extraction, ecological transformation, and a long history of being imagined from elsewhere.

“The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars” resists imagining the future as either dystopian inevitability or technological salvation. Instead, Nagem considers how scientific research, traditional knowledge, artistic speculation, and material transformation might generate new ways of inhabiting worlds already undergoing profound ecological change. The exhibition asks where we are going next, and how different forms of life might continue together within altered conditions of heat, time, and planetary belonging.

Read more and RSVP for the opening at links in bio.

It’s been a busy week of closing events, but in case you missed them, Mari Nagem’s (@mari_nagem) solo show, “The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars,” has been extended until October 10th!

Thank you to all who joined us last Saturday for a day of curated selects with Interspecies Library (@interspecieslibrary) founder Oscar Salguero. This selection of artists books, made by Salguero in response to Nagem’s exhibition, explored speculative geological, oceanic, vegetal, and animal relationships that align with the themes and concepts of the show. Check out Interspecies Library’s profile for more info about upcoming projects.

The one-day activation utilized Nagem’s adaptable work “space analog” as a display surface for the books. The work is informed by research on human travel to space conducted at Biosphere 2. Throughout the exhibition, it has served as a platform for discussion, making, and collective gathering.

Learn more and see additional photos at 🔗 in bio.

Stop by during gallery hours (Wed–Sat, 12–6 pm) through October 10th to see the exhibition in person!

In “à deriva (adrift),” @mari_nagem presents a piece of found driftwood encrusted with two spherical stones that double as vigilant eyes of the forest. An offering from the ocean, the driftwood brings together material and living forms shaped across radically different timescales into contact. The work points to the longevity and potency of geological time, and the relative brevity of human existence.

THIS WEEK + NEXT: join us for two programs presented in conversation with the exhibition:

📚 Curated Selects with @interspecieslibrary
THIS Saturday, September 19th, 12–6 pm
Browse a pop-up selection of artists’ books curated by Interspecies Library founder Oscar Salguero (@softcoreny) followed by a presentation and happy hour at 5 pm.

“ruínas ninhos” (“ruin nests”) is a series of ceramic sculptures in @mari_nagem’s exhibition, “The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars.” Created through a process of carefully folding and manipulating clay, the sculptures take inspiration from birds’ nests, enclosed structures with convoluted interiors that protect eggs from predators. Embedded with mineral inclusions and resting on luminous acrylic supports, the works suggest futuristic ruins shaped by ideas of mining and organic architecture.

“Nagem’s investment in this process of form generation arises partly from the history of mineral extraction in her home country of Brazil and partly from ecological knowledge,” writes catalogue essayist Juntao Yang (@knowledgeairailin). “These forms, retaining the creases of softness while now fired and hardened, might also be ruins left by former mountains. The mountain was once vast; what remains is small, disordered, and residual. Yet protection and vigilance have not disappeared. Through understanding and negotiation, they acquire form once more, turning the ruin into a nest once again preparing itself for what has yet to hatch.”

Join us at CUE on Saturday, 9/19, the eve of Climate Week NYC, for a day of curated selects with Interspecies Library (@interspecieslibrary). ✨

Founder Oscar Salguero (@softcoreny) will bring a selection of artists’ books to CUE, and visitors are invited to browse, chat, and hang out in the gallery. The selection explores speculative geological, oceanic, vegetal, and animal relationships, in conversation with the themes and concepts of Mari Nagem’s (@mari_nagem) solo show, “The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars.”

At 5 pm, join us for a presentation and happy hour, during which Salguero will share more about the library and the curated selection.

Interspecies Library is the first archive dedicated to the curation and advancement of artists’ books focused on alternative interspecies futures. The growing collection aspires to reflect our changing attitudes toward and in acknowledgment of more-than-human worlds.

All are welcome to come and go throughout the day. RSVP is appreciated but not required; see link in bio.

(And come back on 9/22 for Space Meal with @tessitanyc during the final week of the show!)

It’s the unofficial last weekend of summer, and temperatures in NYC are still hovering around 90. ☀️

Gift yourself The Tropics cap, for increasingly obvious reasons.

The coordinates of the tropics are not fixed; as Earth’s axial tilt shifts over time, so do the lines that define the tropical zone. Embroidered with 23°26′16.8″ (the average 2026 N and S latitudes of the tropics) the cap is simultaneously style, sunshade, and geographic timestamp.

This limited edition was designed and produced specifically for Mari Nagem’s solo exhibition, “The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars,” at CUE.

Order at the link in bio or pick one up in the gallery!

Join us on 9/22 for “Space Meal,” a roving multi-course dinner by artist and chef @tessitanyc, presented in conversation with @mari_nagem’s solo show, “The Tropics, The Moon, and Mars” during @climateweeknyc (and the last week of the show!)

“Space Meal” does not propose a menu for outer space. Instead, it begins here on Earth, where changing environments, new technologies, and inherited knowledge continually shape and reshape what we consume.

The menu draws from homegrown culinary traditions alongside ingredients and techniques that evoke changing landscapes, imagined ecosystems, geological time, and new and longstanding technologies. Each dish is situated in direct relationship to the spatial and conceptual environment of the exhibition, offering a sensory and embodied exploration of taste, texture, and place.

“Space Meal” is ticketed on a sliding scale from $60-100 and includes seven vegetarian food offerings and drinks. All proceeds support expenses and labor that make the event possible. Members of CUE enter free.

Capacity is limited! Learn more and grab tickets at links in bio. 🎟️ taken in CUE Art Foundation by @cueart
