This is my first post on this profile I call Cuentos y Corazón, which means stories and heart.

In this introductory video, I share my own journey to discovering my #Nuevomexicano heritage and roots. This is a place for me to share my passion for history and culture in #newmexico and #southerncolorado.

Bienvenidos.

Before freezers, here’s how people preserved their green chile. It was called “verde seco” or “chile pasado.” Did your family do this method? Let me know in the comments! #nmtrue #newmexicotrue #chile #greenchile by @cuentosycorazon

In Santa Fe, St. John’s College honored Rodolfo Anaya and his book Bless Me, Ultima today. I was invited to speak about the impact of the book. It’s a beautiful story that speaks to us about identity, conflict and our ties to the land. Happy to honor the legacy of a great man. by @cuentosycorazon

A little visit to the historic Santa Fe train depot. My grandfather worked as a clerk in this building and I remember when it was a fully functioning train depot. #nmtrue #newmexico #railroads taken in Santa Fe, New Mexico by @cuentosycorazon

The novel Bless Me, Ultima has been repeatedly banned.

What were people so afraid of?

I take a quick look at the history of how people tried to suppress this legendary story.

I’m also helping @sjcsantafe celebrate the book and Anaya in Santa Fe.

If you want to understand New Mexico, read Bless Me, Ultima. 📖

Rudolfo Anaya’s novel follows Antonio, a young boy growing up in New Mexico in the 1940s, as Ultima, a curandera, comes to live with his family. It’s a story of faith, family, mystery and belonging. I’ve been fortunate to interview Anaya several times, and I still treasure my signed copy.

Now I’m helping @sjcsantafe celebrate the book.

And New Mexico high school students can get a free copy. 📕

Reading Bless Me Ultima again after many years. I love seeing the old phrase “Buenos días le de Dios,” as the children greet Ultima when she arrives to their home. by @cuentosycorazon

The construction of this building began in 1733. I try to imagine life for some of my distant ancestors who were baptized in the Santa Cruz church in northern New Mexico.

Many Nuevomexicanos have ties to this church over centuries.

I attended a wedding here at the church over the weekend and I loved being surrounded by the history of this place.

The designs of the wooden altars and santos reflect the times. Not ornate with gold but rustic and simple with no sanitization of blood and death. This was the penitente way. taken in La Iglesia De Santa Cruz de la Canada by @cuentosycorazon
