This week in @airmailweekly I look at three new exhibitions on the occasion of a centennial celebration in Torino of Marisa Merz- the domestic disrupter who was allied with Arte Povera but not precisely of it. Beginning in the 1960s, the messy debate about whether artists’ lives could be separated from their work became particularly challenging. Art and personal narratives often came wrapped in the same skin. Merz ignored the boundaries of traditional art. She said, “There’s never been a separation between my work and my life.” @fondazionemerz @castellodirivoli @gamtorino #marisamerz #artepovera #italy #torino by @culturezohn

At the top-of-hill climb to the Castel Sant Elmo you will find a very odd Museo Novecento. While the historical references and wall labels are well documented this museum has mostly very poor examples of the many art influences of the decades. I found a few things- one rather racy! You will get a great workout, lovely views of the city and Bay of Naples. Novecento at the Galeria d’Italia in the city centro proper also in short supply. But the rationalist building ( here and many other spots in the city) are primo. #napoli #naples #novecento by @culturezohn

@realbelvederedisanleucio This isn’t #hansbellmer but it looked so much like. No this is the #museodellasetadisanleucio a fascinating place just on the #caserta hill. Thank you @amacademyrome #silk by @culturezohn

À discovery. An offshoot of the Capitoline collections housed in the Centrale Museo Montemartini. Besides the beautiful mosaics and statues set against the giant turbines that once powered the city, a fantastic installation of Roman fashion from the 50s to the 70s is now on view. Here is Claudia Cardinale’s incredibly chic tunic by Irene Galitzine in The Pink Panther and a dress I’d wear today. #claudiacardinale #irenegalitzine #romanfashion @centrale_montemartini #thepinkpanther by @culturezohn

I am always so intrigued by @sophiecalle @museomaxxi who documents her life and work in the most original way. I once interviewed her for @huffpost and sensed she would always have a new way of slicing and dicing how a woman and artist could interact with our world. I often am inspired by her takes on love life and art. See this comprehensive exhibition in double header with @tabilbaoestudio . #maxxi #sophiecalle #artist #original by @culturezohn

The great Mexican architect @tabilbaoestudio at her interactive opening last night @museomaxxi . A treat to see her with her typically creative interventions into NATURE. #architecture #mexico #nature by @culturezohn

A thrilling visit to “Palazzo Piacentini-Vaccaro which combines Rationalist architecture and 20th-century art into a unique ensemble that represents an exceptional example of reviving traditional Italian artistic techniques.” This is FAI weekend all over Italy and you can see many treasures normally closed to the public. This rationalist fascistic marvel has this amazing stained glass by Mario Sironi and tapestries that are quite racy at times. The ceilings are high high high the stone and marble all quarried in Italy natch. Depero and Prampolini art. The FAI does amazing work helping preserve and bring attention to all kinds of wonderful buildings. Thank you @fondoambiente for the glorious visit. #architecture #rationalism #rome by @culturezohn

#pontormo @scuderiequirinale Two favorites 🌟🌟🌟this is a Medici. He looks stressed and I’m trying to find out why. From the Wiki “Alessandro de' Medici (1510–1537) was the illegitimate son of Pope Clement VII and an enslaved woman of African descent named Simonetta. Nicknamed "il Moro" (the Moor) for his dark complexion, he was appointed hereditary Duke of Florence in 1532. His reign was highly controversial, marked by tyranny and centralizing authority, which ultimately led to his assassination by his cousin Lorenzaccio in 1537.” Le tout Rome in attendance. by @culturezohn

A special surprise @francisfordcoppola @amacademyrome Francis says “I write early in the morning because no one’s hurt my feelings yet.” I love that. #francisfordcoppola #director #serendipity #rome by @culturezohn
