Does anyone else remember spending hours browsing through The Cupboard?

For 77 years, The Cupboard was a special part of Cincinnati—a place where generations of customers came to browse, shop, catch up, and simply “Chill.”

Although The Cupboard closed in June 2025, a smaller version of its iconic sandblasted wooden sign can still be seen at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio.

That sign was more than just a storefront marker. With its bold lettering, distinctive design, and memorable “Chill” message, it became part of The Cupboard’s identity and a familiar sight to generations of Cincinnatians, University of Cincinnati students, and visitors to the area. It captured the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that made The Cupboard such a memorable place.

Take a closer look at the sign in this video. Does it bring back memories of browsing the shelves, meeting up with friends, or spending time around campus? Even though the store is gone, the “Chill” effect lives on in the stories, laughter, and good times shared by everyone who experienced it.

Early this morning Monday, May 19, 2025 our sandblasted "Cupboard" wood sign came down. It's been a long run of 77 years for us. Most importantly, we could not have done this without ALL of the Cincinnati communities that supported us over all those years. Thank you to all of you collectively and individually! All the best, Barry L. #cincinnati #ohio #uofcincy #hightimes @cincinnatimagazine @cupboardthe taken in The Cupboard by @cupboardthe
