Albertans were asked to guess how much of our healthcare budget goes to non-permanent residents. The guesses? 15% to 50%. The reality? Just 1%.

Omar Mouallem hit the streets to show the math, and it’s clear we’re being sold a pile of BS. The budget strain isn’t coming from immigrants. It’s coming from UCP government choices. We need to stick together, not get divided.

Vote NO on October 19.

SOLIDARITY ✊

Workers from Unifor, USW, and CUPE came together with Public Interest Alberta to stand up for our neighbours and for Canada. The volunteers hit the doors in Calgary last night to spread the word about the importance of voting in the referendum.

There’s still time to vote in the advance polls, and it’s crucial that you do so. We can’t let Smith and the UCP take healthcare away from families, take education away from children, and take Alberta out of Canada.

Make your voice heard and your vote matter.

Blaming immigrants for policy failures won’t solve anything. It just turns us against each other.

We’re continuing our video series with Linda Hoang to talk with Albertans about the upcoming referendum, and why saying “yes” to the anti-immigration questions should not be on the table.

Linda sits down with Sarah, who breaks down why the proposed questions are “unserious” and extremely dystopian. Sarah points out that while population growth is putting a strain on our systems, it’s because we weren’t prepared to meet it, not because of immigrants, who actually help power these systems. Creating a two-tier system of human rights and blaming everyday people for the failures of those with wealth and power is not the right step toward a prosperous future. We need to promote human dignity and decency, banding together as a community instead of turning on each other.

More of these conversations are on the way.

Blaming immigrants won’t fix the real-world problems in our public services. It is just a distraction.
We’re continuing our video series with Linda Hoang to talk with Albertans about the upcoming referendum, and why we need to vote NO on questions 1 through 9.
Linda sits down with Avery, who shares their family’s experience moving to Canada and how unfair it is to see newcomers targeted by proposed fees for basic healthcare and education.
As Avery points out, the government encouraged population growth without preparing our services. Now, instead of taking responsibility and addressing the actual problem, they’re using immigrants as a scapegoat. Newcomers aren’t breaking our systems. They help keep everything moving. It’s easier for the government to “blame the rain than the actual roof,” but we shouldn’t be voting out of fear instead of facts.

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you’ve had time to connect with friends and family this weekend. We also hope you were able to have some important discussions about the referendum.

Blaming newcomers won’t fix Alberta’s schools or healthcare. It just divides our communities.

We’re continuing our video series with Linda Hoang to talk with Albertans about the upcoming referendum, and why we need to vote NO on questions 1 through 9.

Linda sits down with Marcela, whose family came to Canada from Chile to escape political unrest. Marcela shares how offensive it is to see immigration targeted on the ballot.

As she points out, newcomers aren’t responsible for the strain on our public services. In fact, they’re the very people working in our hospitals, caring for patients, and keeping our classrooms running.

Stripping access to basic services and pitting neighbors against each other isn’t about fairness. It’s scapegoating that devalues the essential work immigrants do for Alberta every day.

More of these conversations are on the way.

Vote NO on Questions 1 through 9 on October 19.

Immigrants aren’t the reason Alberta’s public services are struggling.
We’re launching a new video series with Linda Hoang to talk with Albertans about the upcoming referendum, and why we need to vote NO on questions 1 through 9.
First up, Linda talks with AGP, a local teacher. They look at Question 1, which proposes charging extra fees to non-permanent residents for healthcare and schooling. As AGP points out, families living and working here are already paying taxes. Charging them again is just double-dipping to cover up chronic mismanagement.

Believe it or not, each of these books and shows are going to be banned in Alberta libraries under Danielle Smith.

Starting January 1st, if you, a grownup, want to borrow Outlander from your local library, you will have to ask a staff person to fetch it for you from the restricted section.

If a university student needs to do a paper on the Glenbow Museum, guess what? There is a single work of art in the book shown in this video that the UCP has deemed inappropriate, which means the *entire book* has to be removed from the general collection and kept under virtual lock and key.

That means staff are going to be taken away from programming, collections, and actual work to be book bouncers.

This isn’t about “protecting children” (who can and will access far worse on their phones.) This is about importing absurd American culture wars to Canadian soil.

Our libraries need funding, not policing. by @cupeab
