Did you know your DNA can influence how your body responds to medications?
This Pharmacist Month, we're highlighting the many ways pharmacists show up in the communities through research, innovation and patient care.
Pharmacogenomics is one area where the CU Anschutz Pharmacy community is making an impact, studying how genetic differences can influence the way medications work for everyone. By turning genetic insights into real-world healthcare tools, pharmacists are helping improve medication effectiveness, enhance patient safety, and support more personalized care.

What comes to mind when you think of a pharmacist?
We asked colleagues across the CU Anshutz campus this exact question, the most common response was: medications.
But pharmacists do so much more.
From serving on interdisciplinary healthcare teams and helping manage complex patient care, to advancing research through clinical trials; improving medication safety and driving innovations in precision medicine, pharmacists play a vital role across healthcare in their communities.
They are researchers, educators, clinicians and medication experts who help improve lives in hospitals, clinics, laboratories and beyond.
Listen to what members of our CU Anschutz community had to say and discover why pharmacy is so much more than what comes to mind. ✨

Student Ambassador POV – Ashley, third-year PharmD student

We know test-tober can be spooky👻, but we also know you can do it! Here are some tips to help you

1️⃣ Get Organized - Be sure to have all due dates written down to help make sure nothing is forgotten.
2️⃣ Study effectively - Find how you study best and stick to that method. Rather than trying to memorize everything, focus on understanding concepts and relationships.
3️⃣ Ask for help if you need it - Professors and peers are here to help you! Utilize office hours, facilitated group learning, and personal tutoring if you are struggling
4️⃣ Sleep - Rest is extremely important for your brain and helps you to feel refreshed both for class and while studying
5️⃣ Make time for yourself - Be sure each day to do something non-academic related, like reading a book, trying a new recipe, watching Sunday football, or going to the gym.

Remember, you've got this! 💪 by @cupharmacy

In 1920, seven women graduated from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy as the School’s first all-female graduating class: Estel Bacon, Charlotte Burgess, Helen Myers, Helen Simpson, Hazel Jaquiss, Faye O’Brien and Margaret Swisher. Three of the seven are in the photo above with members of the School’s faculty.

More than a century later, the pharmacy profession has evolved far beyond dispensing medications. Today, pharmacists are clinicians, researchers, educators and healthcare leaders—providing direct patient care, advancing precision medicine, developing new therapies, and driving scientific discovery.

These seven women helped open the door for generations who followed. Today, women are shaping the future of pharmacy in ways those first graduates could scarcely have imagined. We honor their legacy and the women continuing to move the profession forward. 🖤💛

Student Ambassador POV: Elise

“How do you help your community?”

During my current PharmD Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotation at the Outpatient GI/Head and Neck Oncology Clinic, I help care for my community by educating patients about their new chemotherapy regimens. By taking the time to talk with patients, answer their questions, and explain their medications, I hope to ease their fears and help them feel supported as they navigate a challenging and often overwhelming time in their lives.

🖤💛 During American Pharmacists Month, we’re celebrating the pharmacists who care for our communities in ways that extend far beyond the exam room. Professor Jennifer Trujillo, PharmD, is helping transform how pharmacists care for people living with diabetes, while preparing the next generation to bring empathy, innovation and patient-centered care to their own communities. In a Q&A with CU Connections, Dr. Trujillo explains why her commitment extends beyond the classroom, how she uses AI in teaching and research, and the far-reaching impact pharmacists can have on the health of our communities. 🖤💛 Read the Q&A in our link in bio.
