In this amalgamation of two clips from 1960 and 2025, Mike Austin (@scpga 1984 Instructor of the Year and Record Long Driver) and Rory McIlroy (@pgatour Grand Slam Winner), discuss the advancing left arm and shift during the downswing.

The straight advancing left arm is a major stabilizing factor in consistently accurate long driving. We think it is illuminating to hear both of these outstanding golfers discussing this mechanic in their own words - almost as if they are finishing each other's sentences.

In this clip, Jack Nicklaus (@pgatour Grand Slam Winner) teaches how he begins releasing the club from the top of the downswing as long as the body is moving in unison to the left side. By doing this, the hands, wrists, and arms, catch up to the advancement of the left shoulder so that everything becomes square at impact with maximum power.

Mike Austin (@scpga @pga Instructor of the Year, 1984, and World Record Long Driver), also firmly advocated the same mechanic of stepping down on to the lead heel while giving the club a stimulus so that it throws through the impact zone to achieve maximum distance with great accuracy.

We firmly believe studying the great players and teachers of the game through kinesiology yields the common denominators of fundamental swing mechanics so that we can all have more fun playing the game.

Mike Austin (@scpga Instructor of the Year, 1984) was a pioneer of the application of kinesiology to the study of golf. He was also a world record long driver, hitting a record 515 yard drive in the @usga US National Seniors Tournament in 1974. In this clip, Mike teaches when the wrists are cocked in the backswing and how this ensures the club stays on the proper plane for delivering maximum power behind the golf ball.

Mike was an influential instructor and a mentor to many instructors of the @pga to this day.

The clip is interspersed with demonstrations from one of Mike's personal students wearing The Radius Swing Training Aid.

The Radius is developed by engineers personally trained by Mike. It is based on authentic teachings of his golf swing by students who learned from Mike for many years.

Mike Austin (@scpga 1984 Professional of the Year and World Record Long Driver) and Bobby Jones (founder of The Masters and one of the greatest golfers of all time) had strong opinions on common swing flaws and how to overcome them. In this segment of clips, Mike and Bobby go over an incorrect weight shift, and then discuss how to properly shift the weight from the lead foot to the trail foot, and back again, in order to hit powerful, controlled golf shots with good balance, posture, and technique.

We think studying clips of vintage golf instruction by great teachers helps to establish the foundations of the golf swing that hold true through time and work in accordance to the laws of physics and kinesiology.
