Two weeks until our debut concert with organist Drew Cantrill-Fenwick, performing new music by eight North East composers on Fri 14th Nov 7:30pm.

Introducing Peter Bourne — a composer, sound artist, and performer. Peter plays trombone regularly with @Powtesband, a six-piece alt-folk collective that uses acoustic textures and drones to explore themes of enclosure. Although his compositional interests vary, much of Peter’s work draws on his interest in sound-based interactivity and group decision-making, utilising accessible scores that often use game-like structures. He has explored these ideas using elements of traditional score notation for musical ensembles, including Psappha and CoMA Manchester, and more recently using freer rules-based scores with Sound Games, a fully accessible performance-as-research group that meets regularly to write and perform scores that have a focus on interactivity.

Three weeks until our debut concert with organist Drew Cantrill-Fenwick, performing new music by eight North East composers on Friday 14th November at 7:30pm.

Introducing @paul_taylor_piano, an accomplished pianist and keyboard player specialising in improvisation. Paul’s music is evocative; combining unusual harmonies and sonorities with an original and fluid technique. In recent years, he has emerged as one of the most interesting and innovative solo pianists, eschewing conventional jazz clichés for an unorthodox, harmonically complex and compellingly beautiful language inspired by the classical tradition. A 2018 northern line R6 ambassador artist supported by Jazz North and Arts Council England, Paul also took part in Cheltenham Jazz Festival’s Creative Lab in 2021.

Just under four weeks until our debut concert with organist Drew Cantrill-Fenwick, performing new music by eight North East composers on Friday 14th November at 7:30pm.

Introducing composer Matthijs Hebly. Matthijs received piano and music theory lessons from a young age, studying counterpoint and composition. He went on to attend the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, where he studied Music Recording. A Dutch national, Matthijs moved to the United Kingdom in 2006. He is trilingual and has lived in four countries — the Netherlands, Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom. Matthijs has worked as both a software developer and a translator, and in recent years has shifted his focus towards composition once again.

Five weeks until our debut concert with organist Drew Cantrill-Fenwick, performing new music by eight North East composers on Fri 14th Nov 7:30pm.

Introducing @jorgeboehringer — an artist, researcher and composer of installations and music. Composing circumstances and situations, Jorge’s work resonates in the space between pattern formation and recognition. Listening to vibration, time becomes apparent, then recedes into texture;
non-institutional spatialisation: sound comes from anywhere and might last forever; a listener, free to move ( ). Themes: morphological, phenomenological, visible and invisible, temporal environments.

You can also catch Jorge performing solo (viola, electronics, feedback) at @thelubberfiend on October 22nd, and at @cobaltstudios.ouseburn on December 19th.

Six weeks today until our debut concert, where organist Drew Cantrill-Fenwick will perform new music by eight North East composers on Friday 14th Nov 7:30pm.

Introducing @pilkington.sally, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer. Sally has made two highly-eclectic albums as a member of wonky-pop band Hen Ogledd, released over 80 'albums' as part of pandemic-era project Bulbils, and now performs with questing synth-and-drums duo Yotuns. Sally's most recent work draws on many hours of improvisations at The Church of Saint Matthew in Elswick and Holy Cross Church Ryton and explores, calmly and in careful detail, the rich textures and vast harmonic possibilities of the pipe organ.

You can also catch Sally performing as part of Yotuns at Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music on Friday 10th Oct.
