Part 2 — continued

Nina Runsdorf @ninarunsdorfjewelry was immediately drawn to The Bubbling Well series. When she encountered “Moss” (2022), it was an intuitive match—aligned with both her sensibility and her environment. These works thrive in well-appointed spaces that need something unexpected: a collision of raw texture, wild paint, and sculptural presence.

Functioning as objects as much as paintings, the pieces remain deliberately untamed. They hold their own as outsiders, yet have the ability to pull everything else in the room together. Within Nina’s atelier, Moss lives in dialogue with works by Picasso (ceramics), John Chamberlain, Richard Prince, and Adam McEwen—edgy characters sharing space, each amplifying the other.

The Bubbling Well — “Moss” marked a turning point in my practice. My puffed-up paintings evolved beyond the traditional idea of a painting as something flat, framed, and fixed to a wall. Instead, they explore form in three-dimensional space—where a painting can exist as an object, an interruption, a presence.

Moss was the first piece in which I left raw sawdust exposed in the final surface. Unfiltered. Breathing. Alive. The material itself became part of the work’s pulse—its texture, its history, its charge.

Part 1
I was introduced to Nina Runsdorf @ninarunsdorfjewelry through a mutual friend, Russell Steele @russell_e_steele, as she was shaping her Paris-inspired NYC atelier to house her lifestyle and jewelry collections. I was fortunate that one of my paintings caught her eye-Some people carry a magnetic charge, drawing the best out of spaces, objects, and those around them. Nina moves through the world this way.

She is a rare union of spirit and impeccable taste—art, clothing, furniture, jewelry. To be in her presence is to feel that everything matters and seamlessly fits together, that life itself is alive with meaning. A courageous champion of others and the Avant-garde she lives with intention, character, and an uncompromising sense of refinement.

Part of a series of paintings in which I inscribe motifs, thoughts, and gestures into soft molding paste. The process is similar to wet concrete—when people sign their names, a moment is captured. As it hardens, the gesture is preserved like a fossil. In these works, it is the thought, the hand, and the motion that remain.

This piece found its home in her atelier, hanging opposite a work by Richard Prince in her dining area.

I’ve been sculpting since I was a little kid in my dad’s wood shop. The totem was a form that resonated with me from some of my earliest creations — In the late 90’s I remember starting to work large scale works while living off the grid in the Oakland hills in the back of an old army truck/- instincts intertwined with a primordial desire to describe form and what it is to be human.
I suppose this instinct is ancient, something that reaches back to our earliest makers. I often think of the works on Easter Island… that urge to build upward, to mark existence.

This piece is a modern-day evolution of that same impulse — incorporating found objects, tennis balls, driftwood , and even a small relic from my childhood: From Star Trek Voyager, the USS Voyager.
