As Mayor, it was my honor—along with Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany and Senator Danny Diggs—to present a proclamation recognizing Dr. Gnanvatsaldas Swami during his visit to Newport News.

Dr. Swami is a world-renowned spiritual scholar and orator who has inspired millions through over 15,500 talks across the globe. We are humbled and grateful to welcome him and the BAPS community for an evening of wisdom and reflection on the powerful theme: “Think different, Be different, Succeed different.”

Thank you, Dr. Swami, for sharing your message and reminding us of the impact of purposeful thought, action, and service. by @curtisbethany3

Being elected to serve as councilman for my home district is a true honor. To be selected by my colleagues to serve as Vice Mayor in my first term is humbling. This was already going to be a pivotal transition for our city with a new council but the recent tragedy has further demonstrated the need for continued progress and proactive solutions. While my heart grieves for our district and our city, I’m confident that the best version of Newport News is ahead. #uNNity taken in Newport News, Virginia by @curtisbethany3

We’ve heard questions about lowering the real estate tax rate for your benefit and that’s something we’ve seriously considered.

But here’s what we found: Even a one-cent reduction would mostly benefit corporations, apartment owners, and large property owners overall, while the average homeowner would see less than $30 a year in savings.

This initiative puts real dollars back into the hands of homeowners who need support most, while also serving as a pilot for future efforts to expand and strengthen relief based on real needs and results.

We’re officially announcing our re-election campaign for Newport News City Council.

The first term was about proving what’s possible. The second term is about building on the foundation we’ve laid together.

Uptown poured into me long before I ever had the chance to pour back. Earning your trust to represent our community has been one of the greatest honors of my life. That trust is not something I take lightly. Our district and city deserves the very best — and I’ll continue advocating for us.

I hope you’ll continue on this journey with us. Learn more about our plan for the next four years at curtisbethany3.com (link in bio)

Today @masego, @plusntrust, and I teamed up to make sure @soundscapeshr have what they need heading into the new school year — instruments, supplies, and a reminder that greatness comes from right here in our community. And what better place to do it than our former high school, Woodside.

Some local youth also got the chance to have a jam session with Masego — a moment I’m sure they’ll reflect on for a long time to come.

I grew up, Uptown. My daughter is growing up, Uptown. And it means something when someone like Masego — who was shaped by this same community — comes back to invest in it. Days like today remind our youth that where you’re from can be exactly where your greatness begins.

Grateful for partners like @PlusNTrust and @sweetwatersound who helped make today possible.

Last week, we broke ground on the future Grissom Library, a $40 million investment in the North District and in Newport News’ future.

The new library will be a modern community hub with expanded technology, flexible spaces, and new opportunities for learning, connection, and innovation.

Located on the former Sherwood site, it also marks the beginning of a larger vision for future growth in Denbigh.

Thank you to Councilman Harris and Vice Mayor Bethany for their strong advocacy for the North District. Together, we’re continuing to build a stronger Newport News! by @curtisbethany3

I promised that Uptown would be an equal priority as we enter the next phase of our city’s development — and today, that promise was attested at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Virgil L. Grissom Library.

For a long time, many of us have felt like growth and progress Uptown has been slow, even stagnant. So today means a lot to me — because after years of waiting and new leadership, we’re finally seeing real, visible progress take shape.

For decades, this site has been a cornerstone of our community. Now, we’re reimagining it for the future. Today’s libraries are more than traditional book repositories — they are experiences and social hubs designed for how people live, learn, and connect.

This project will serve as an anchor for Denbigh’s revitalization and a key economic driver for the surrounding area.

A $40 million investment. A 51,000+ sq. ft. modern facility. A clear commitment to the future of our district and our city.

Equally important is the development that will surround the library, and I look forward to continuing this work with our Economic Development Authority to bring that vision to life.

This is just one step — I remain committed to delivering real results for our district and our city.
