I had an amazing final two days at the Portland retro game expo.
.
Got to see my good friend, Laura Faye who is the voice of Princess Rosalina and finally meet Samantha Kelly the voice of Princess Peach for 18 freakin years. We are finally friends IRL (@samanthakellypeach @laurafayesmith )

Got to see a kid with a sniper rifle
.
Got to meet Al Lowe, creator of Leisure Suit Larry.
.
Tetris World Championship!
.
Cassette Tape boxes with USB thumbdrive Indie Games. (I bought an RPG)
.
Got to see Error 47 play the hits from 7th Guest, Kings Quest, Space Quest etc etc.
.
Finally my haul, all the shit I didnt need but purchased anyway. See you next year PRGE!

Just finished my 4 slot MVS Big Red cabinet and it brings back all the Round Table Pizza memories with a little extra bling (I cannot help myself).
.
I used a 26" 4:3 LCD from Unico and although it wasnt cheap, its a beautiful picture (once you get into the filters and settings). I build these things to last decades, so CRT maintenence doesnt apply.

Powered by Raspberry Pi 4, this machine boots to the four mini marquees, with a hidden menu button 🤫 to enable all MVS titles.

I know emulation vs original software is still debated, but honestly with the number of high quality emulation solutions available, it's harder for me to defend the OG. taken in Portland, Oregon by @customvintagearcade

Do you like Gachapon? Tokyo residents sure do! The Gachapon industry certainly doesnt help the amount of plastics deposited into the landfills of the world, but Holy Smokes are they kawaii! Sorry about the wind sound but the video is worth it! Tokyo Japan is all about crane games aka UFO Catchers aka skill games. On the floors where Space Invaders and Street Fighter 2 once dominated now are a sea of crane games. Disappointing to me, as an arcade game fan, but their allure is hard to deny.
In Shinjuku, a Taito Station and a Game Panic are right across the street from each other, each boasting an insane number of Crane Games and Rythym Games (detailed in an upcoming post). I saw a lot of dates with young people feeding a lot of 100 yen coins into these machines. I hope they all got what they wanted!
My phone made the Game Panic seem like a strobe light but I assure you that is not the case.
The two hand clapping creatures are based at the outside of Taito Station East Exit (Shinjuku) and I don't really understand who they are or where they came from but I love them.

My favorite arcade in Tokyo (that I have found so far) is undoubtedly the Mikado Arcade Center in Takadanobaba. Takadanobaba is a mouthful, but it is on the very convenient JR Yamanote Line which circles the inner city of Tokyo. Inside the Mikado's two entrances (one is right down the street, don't miss it) you are treated to some of the coolest old school Japanese arcade machines in the city. I have not seen so many rare and delightful bangers. My first time playing the bizarre and awesome Star Blade (Namco), a fully motioned Tiger-Heli, Namco's Cobra the Arcade, After Burner Climax, Out Run 2 and many more. Also home to more pinball machines than I have seen anywhere else in Tokyo.
Bonus points after a long day of playing, there is an incredible sento (public bath house) right down the street where you can soak and sauna to your hearts content for less than $7. The name of the sento is Sekaiyu.

While its true most arcades in Tokyo have gone "full crane game," there are still hidden gems around the city. Google maps is no good, you gotta find them yourself by bumbling around the city (my favorite way to travel) in Akiba there are 4 GiGo arcades. One of them (pic 2) has a floor of retro arcades. Definitely worth a trip to this (sadly empty) floor if you make it to Akiba.
