CUT THE STEM presents Xiaoyi Sun at CACHE: Existing in the Threshold Myth of the Self Moving image 2025 Myth of the Self is an experimental moving image work combining performance and sculpture. It stems from the artist’s reflection on the uncertainty and fluidity of self-memory, fictionalising and reconstructing four stages of life: childhood, primary school, adolescence, and university. Each act of recording is both preservation and dissolution, like cached data that remains stored but unretrieved. Through revisiting archives, reenacting memories, and constructing fictional narratives, the work unfolds between remembering and forgetting, visibility and erasure, revealing fading illusions within memory. For the artist, self-memory exists in a threshold state: neither fully gone nor fully stable. It continuously fractures and reconfigures over time, repeatedly emerging and receding between visibility and erasure. Through interactions with objects representing each life stage, the work evokes the transformation of the self across memory and time. Here, the artwork becomes a form of recall and temporary activation, where the “I” encounters its past selves, only to disperse once again. CUT THE STEM presents Zahra Baqer at CACHE: Existing in the Threshold Out Of Sync Moving Image Video 2026 Out of Sync is a multi-channel spatial film that explores caregiving in the context of dementia through sound and fragmented visual sequences. The work is constructed from three overlapping voices drawn from conversations with caregivers, layered with a composed soundscape. These elements move in and out of alignment, creating a shifting field of attention rather than a fixed narrative. Presented as a looping environment, the film resists a clear beginning or end. Images repeat, drift, and interrupt one another, reflecting a temporal experience shaped by uncertainty and constant adjustment. The installation invites the viewer to navigate between partial moments of recognition and loss, where listening is unstable and attention cannot fully settle. Through this structure, the work reflects a condition in which presence is continuous, yet rarely fully seen. CUT THE STEM presents Brea Freeburn at CACHE: Existing In The Threshold Breathing Field I (Diptych), 2026, Acrylic, marble dust, calcium carbonate, polymer on canvas 70 × 90 cm (each panel) Breathing Field II (Diptych), 2026, Acrylic, marble dust, calcium carbonate, polymer on canvas 70 × 90 cm (each panel) The work sits within a condition of suspension, where elements appear and recede without reaching full clarity. Traces are retained within the surface, yet resist immediate recognition, existing between presence and erasure. The painting operates as a site of stored but unretrieved information, holding a quiet tension between what is visible and what remains latent. The surface is built through a mixture of gesso and calcium carbonate, producing a stratified texture that is layered, weathered, and reworked over time. Through scraping, sanding, and the use of unconventional tools, the surface is continually disrupted, creating a sense of propulsion that resists a fully resolved image. Pigment settles and diffuses across this shifting ground, allowing the materials to remain active. In doing so, the work remains open, suspended in a state of becoming. CUT THE STEM presents Qifu Xu at CACHE: Existing in the Threshold Buxqyaix Digital Mysticism Medium: Moving Image (digital narrative, rendered from Unreal Engine 5) 2025 This work is a VR-based narrative environment presented as a moving image. It reimagines Buyi ancestral memory as a form of digital presence existing within a state of suspension—neither fully visible nor entirely erased. Drawing on indigenous cosmology and Buyi digital mysticism, exploring how a buyi people’s spiritual and cultural memory can be preserved within digital systems against the backdrop of post-modernity and industrialisation, and amidst a situation of population decline and the erosion of ethnic culture, this work constructs a simulated space—composed of data streams and symbolic forms—based on ancient ethnic texts, enabling dispersed individuals to engage with fragments of ritual, language and ancestral consciousness. The work situates itself within a threshold condition, where presence and absence, existence and extinction, are no longer oppositional, but coexisting states. CUT THE STEM presents Yuesong Wang at CACHE: Existing In The Threshold My practice explores fragmentation within my own lived experience. The central painting does not refer to a specific place; through small, indistinct brushstrokes, it becomes a blurred and unrecognisable image of a city. I aim to slow down the viewer’s process of recognition, allowing fragmented information and a non-linear structure to create a delayed mode of understanding. This sense of estrangement makes blurred memories and the passage of time more perceptible on a cognitive level. The work does not lead to a fixed conclusion but remains at the level of viewing. Meaning emerges gradually as fragmented information enters perception and memory, shaped by the viewer’s own experiences rather than a singular narrative. The frame acts as both structure and an extension of information. In contrast to the ambiguity of the painting, it introduces more specific materials and urban references. I consider it a “cool medium” that invites connections rather than delivering a complete meaning. Each work is complete in itself but part of an ongoing series. The frame becomes a metaphor for boundaries, shifting from a passive limit into an active carrier of meaning. CUT THE STEM presents Youngsuk Oh at CACHE: Existing In The Threshold Domestic Carcass, Aceylic sheet, 90 x 45 x 50cm, 2025 This work reconstructs the outer shell of an antique wooden chair. The original chair was tightly wrapped in acrylic; once hardened, the acrylic skin was removed and reassembled. What remains is a transparent structure like the shed skin of a snake, retaining the form but emptied of its substance. The chair, one of the most intimate objects in relation to the body, normally supports weight and defines posture within space. Here, however, it refuses function. The absence of the seated body becomes more present than the object itself. The act of wrapping and peeling is both preservation and erasure. While the surface is revealed, the original material disappears. This paradox recalls the uncanny: the form is familiar, yet its hollow interior produces subtle unease. Drawing on the idea that the essence of a vessel lies in the void it contains, the work shifts attention from material mass to empty space. The chair becomes not an object, but a trace a spatial imprint of a body no longer there. In this emptiness lies potential. The viewer is invited to project presence into absence, completing the work through imagination. CUT THE STEM presents Isabelle Zetterström at CACHE: Existing in the Threshold Evolution 2026 Oil on linen 100 x 40 cm Atom 2025 Oil on cotton canvas 40 x 30 cm Pulsating with life; fleeting, flickering forms reveal a familiarity that dissolves back into the unknown. My practice spans painting, works on paper and ceramics. The oil paintings and watercolours on paper open portals into imagined realms, while my ceramics serve as artefacts gathered from within these ambiguous terrains. Microscopic perspectives merge with luminescent, celestial atmospheres, sometimes reminiscent of deep-sea & corporeal vistas. Ethereal tones of blood merge with volcanic greys, noctilucent pools that resemble water shimmer as floating branches shift into veins, conjuring untethered realms marked by a sense of awe and mystery. Reflecting on the paradoxical nature of life, the beauty within the grotesque, and the way light defines shadow, I investigate contradiction and philosophies of interconnectedness. Forms and patterns echo across micro and macro scapes, holding a mirror to our place within a larger, evolving whole. I begin with a smoke of paint, intuition and a fluid sense of concept, often drawing from life experiences I shift and react as elements appear before me. At times the painting presents its poetry early on; at others, I remain in a state of flux as I attempt to understand what I am being told. Traces of past lives linger within layered surfaces. Depth and detail accumulates through thin clouds of paint. I view painting as a spiritual act, a dance with the subconscious, exposing the soul to unseen forces. I summon paintings from the abyss, escaping into them, only to find my own reflection. CUT THE STEM presents Sungjoo Han at CACHE: Existing In The Threshold Groundtake 1:36 min 2026 <Groundtake> is a video work about the unstable conditions under which identity takes shape. Formed through relations with others, systems of occupation, and external intervention, the self appears not as fixed or autonomous, but as something continuously negotiated and exposed to displacement. By reflecting on the anxieties and hierarchies surrounding occupation and belonging, the work asks what it means to secure a place for oneself at the edge of recognition, and whether a complete and stable self can ever truly exist. This process simulates an accelerated formation of cultural strata, envisioning what future archaeologists might uncover from our present. By fusing natural matter with urban life debris, it reveals a prophecy that the overwhelming information we generate today will ultimately vanish, and what may traverse the river of time to reach the future are these solidified, unreadable cultural remnants. In a silent yet enduring material form, they whisper about our present-day clamour and transience. CUT THE STEM presents Glara Shim at CACHE: Existing In The Threshold Pinhole Narrative I Oil on canvas 24x31cm 2026 Pinhole Narrative I is the first work in an ongoing series exploring cropped and suspended narratives. The image is tightly framed, withholding contextual information while focusing attention on a seemingly ordinary gesture. The narrative remains present yet inaccessible. The title refers to the idea of a pinhole view: a narrow opening through which only fragments can be seen while much remains obscured. This restricted perspective reflects the limits of perception and memory. Positioned between explicit and implicit meaning, the painting invites viewers to project their own interpretations onto the scene. By isolating the gesture from its wider context, the work examines what persists at the edge of consciousness. It focuses on the moments that feel emotionally charged yet resist full articulation.
