@cantharellus__ was on a mission to spear a cabezon to make this Thai red curry. An unlucky grass rockfish crossed his path too. The results were delicious! by @cutprofessor

In Episode 82 of the SpearFactor Podcast, I sit back down with @cutprofessor Matt Bond, this time speaking on behalf of @allwaters_org in his new role with the organization. Matt has been on the show before, and a lot has changed since the last conversation — both for him and for the fight over how Marine Protected Areas are shaped, reviewed, and enforced.
We go deep into the MPA process itself: how we got here, what the original network was built on, where the science and the politics drifted apart, and what the current review and rule-making cycle actually looks like from the inside. Matt walks me through the moving pieces — the agencies, the timelines, the public comment windows, and the points in the process where divers, anglers, and ocean users still have real leverage.
We also talk about what the future holds. What’s on the table for the next round of decisions, what All Waters is pushing for, where the opportunities are, and where the risks are if the user community stays quiet.
If you dive, fish, or care about access to the ocean, this is the conversation to catch up on before the next round of MPA decisions lands.

I haven’t been diving much at all lately, so here is a pic of my first yellowtail . This was @whitekingbolete, @707blacktails and my first trip down to Loreto. I think this was 1994 or 1995. We met the legendary captain Heriberto Unzon (pictured) at the harbor. He was the only one brave enough to take us out in howling wind. He had only ever taken out one other spearfishermen but had never seen big guns and long fins before. He couldn’t believe we could dive as deep as we said we wanted to hunt. We ended up forging a great friendship and having amazing adventures together. I center punched this fish because I missed head shots on two previous attempts. I thought the fish were smaller and closer than they were. I waited until I could see scales before I pulled the trigger. Take me back. by @cutprofessor

I haven’t posted a food montage in a while, so here it goes. Pile and rubberlip perch sashimi and a nice bottle of wine. A lot of people can’t believe I eat raw perch or perch at all. An old Japanese friend turned me on to it. It’s probably my favorite California white meat fish for raw prep. The qualities that make it “mushy” when cooked make it tender and delicious raw. The first pic is the upper part of the fillets plated on top of a “aioli” made with kewpie mayo, olive oil, cilantro, basil, green onions, yuzu kosho, sriracha, and homemade ponzu. I salted it a little before I served it. The second dish is the lower or belly portion of the fillets on an arugula and daikon salad which was dressed with seasoned rice wine vinegar, avocado oil, salt and pepper. The sashimi has homemade ponzu and some kumquat juice and salt on it. by @cutprofessor

@cantharellus__ and I did our first and probably last CenCal halibut dive of the season. One for one. Note the perfectly executed gut shot. This placement maximizes the fight of the fish and also minimizes usable meat damage. This beauty was in 4 or 5 feet of water, feeding on just born perch. by @cutprofessor
