At 2:00 AM on October 22, 1946, armed officers knocked on the doors of over 200 Carl Zeiss optical engineers in East Germany. They were given 2 hours to pack their bags, grab their families, and get on a train. This was Operation Osoaviakhim—the Soviet Union’s secret post-WWII sweep that forcibly relocated thousands of German scientists, technicians, and master lens-grinders to the USSR. While America was recruiting German engineers through Operation Paperclip with promises of high salaries, the Soviets took a direct approach: they packed up 90% of the Carl Zeiss Jena factories and the people who knew how to run them, shipping 92 military trains straight to Russia. Why optics? Because the same masters who built consumer cameras like the Zeiss Super Ikonta also designed artillery rangefinders, aerial recon lenses, and submarine periscopes. For 5+ years, these German experts lived in “gilded cages” outside Moscow and Kyiv. Their job? Set up the stolen Zeiss tooling, translate technical specs, and train Soviet workers until they could manufacture cameras like the Moskva-2 on their own. By 1952, once the technology transfer was complete, most were sent back to East Germany—leaving behind a brand-new Soviet camera industry built on original German hands. Crazy history behind this one! #filmphotography #6x9film #photographyhistory #kodakgold200 #moskva by @cuttingboredcameras
History through cameras is something I didn’t know I liked… In this video, I break down how a pre-war merger with German chemical giant I.G. Farben led to the U.S. government seizing Ansco as “enemy alien property” during WWII—and how a post-war loophole allowed Ansco to rebadge West German Agfa cameras right off American store shelves. Agfa got that cold hard US CASH to rebuild their bombed-out Munich factory, Ansco got world-class optics to take on Kodak, and American buyers got West German gear without the anti-German consumer sentiment fresh off the war. Obviously, it didn’t end up working out as Kodak is still around and noone that is not a camera nerd knows about Ansco. A few extra fun facts about this specific body that didn’t make the cut:     •    The Agfa “Green Grease” Curse: If you find one of these with a completely frozen focus ring today, blame whale oil! Agfa used an organic lubricant that degrades into a hard green resin over 70 years, effectively gluing the brass threads together.     •    That Red-Dot Trick: The Agfa Apotar 45mm f/3.5 features red-dot “zone focusing” on the barrel. Align the red distance marker with the aperture, and the depth-of-field takes care of the rest—no rangefinder or math needed.     •    Double-Exposure Prevention: The wind lever on these doesn’t just advance the film; it cocks the internal leaf shutter and locks the shutter button if the frame isn’t fully wound. Literally the camera that helped rebuild West Germany’s photographic industry after WWII. #rangefindercamera #agfa #ansco #filmphotography #history by @cuttingboredcameras
The camera that captured history’s most famous kiss—and quietly helped save lives. Alfred Eisenstaedt famously used a Leica IIIa to snap the V-J Day Kiss in Times Square. There has definitely been some controversy surrounding this image but that is another story for another day. This specific body (Serial #250417) was manufactured in Wetzlar, Germany back in 1937. Beyond its place in photojournalism history, 1937 sits at a incredible mechanical and human intersection for Ernst Leitz: • Mechanical Summit: The IIIa was the first Leica capable of hitting 1/1000s shutter speeds—allowing street photographers to freeze motion in direct sunlight. It also features Oskar Barnack’s classic dual-window layout (one for split-image rangefinder focusing, one for framing). • The Leader Cut: Like all Barnack rangefinders, it’s a bottom-loader! You actually have to trim the film leader back ~4 inches before loading a cassette, or the sprocket teeth will shred the film. • Human History: In 1937, company head Ernst Leitz II expanded the “Leica Freedom Train”—secretly dispatching hundreds of Jewish citizens overseas as “sales reps” to escape Nazi persecution, giving each refugee a brand-new Leica camera as financial collateral to help restart their lives. Pair this body with a collapsible 50mm f/2 Summar lens, and you’re holding 80+ years of pure mechanical mastery. #Leica #LeicaIIIa #BarnackLeica #35mmfilm by @cuttingboredcameras
You win some you lose some… The nature of buying untested cameras is sometimes they just don’t work. It’s harder for me to stock Leica because the risk is just much higher. I found someone to fix it, though ,and I’ll have a fully CLA’d M5 soon! The 135mm f/4 Leica lens surprised me so much. I still wouldn’t recommend it though as it is very annoying to carry around. Need a budget AE-1? The Canon AV-1 often gets overlooked, but taking it out to find some snow monkeys in Japan proved just how good this budget-friendly body really is. We teamed up with Gelatin Labs to bring these winter frames to life. While the AE-1 gets all the hype and currently fetches around $150 to $200+ on eBay, the AV-1 usually sells for a fraction of that—typically averaging between $40 and $70 for the body, or $80 to $120 paired with a clean 50mm lens. Fun facts about this setup: The “V” in AV-1 stands for Aperture Value. Unlike the shutter-priority AE-1, the AV-1 operates strictly as an aperture-priority camera. You pick your desired aperture/depth of field, and the camera automatically selects the correct shutter speed. It was released in 1979 as a simpler, more accessible option in the A-series line. Because it handles exposure calculation automatically, it acts like a glorified point-and-shoot with access to Canon’s entire, legendary line of FD mount glass. These frames were shot on Yes!Star Supreme 400 speed film sourced in Japan, then developed and scanned using Hi-C Gelform by Gelatin Labs. Have you ever shot on an AV-1, or are you strictly an AE-1 loyalist? Let us know in the comments below.
