Taking Caribbean experiences and lessons to the global stage!

How do we ensure that healthcare workers can continue providing compassionate, quality HIV care when they are also dealing with the trauma of a natural disaster?

CVC's Strategic Information Lead, Dr. Sharlene Jarrett, brought this important conversation to the Fast Track Cities Conference in Berlin, Germany, where she presented on “Adapting a Trauma-Informed Care Training to Support HIV Health Workers and Communities in the Aftermath of a Disaster – The Jamaican Experience.”

Drawing on Jamaica's experience following Hurricane Melissa, the presentation highlighted how a training programme originally designed to strengthen trauma-informed HIV care was adapted to address the psychological and emotional needs of healthcare and outreach workers affected by the disaster.

The initiative supported 250 healthcare workers, integrating trauma-informed care, psychological first aid and practical approaches to managing disaster-related stress, while recognising the heightened vulnerabilities faced by people living with HIV and other key populations during emergencies.

Through this international engagement, CVC continues to contribute Caribbean perspectives and practical lessons to global discussions on HIV, healthcare resilience and disaster preparedness.

From empowering young entrepreneurs and amplifying youth voices through research to training peer educators and challenging harmful gender norms, the Strengthening Access, Inclusion and Leadership for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SAIL-SRHR) Project has helped create opportunities, build confidence and equip young people to become agents of change in their communities.

These achievements took centre stage at the project's recent Close-Out Ceremony, where participants, implementing partners, government officials and other stakeholders came together to celebrate the lives touched, lessons learned and progress made in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among young people in Jamaica.

The celebration was attended by the High Commissioner of Canada to Jamaica Mark Berman and State Minister in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Krystal Lee, reflecting the importance of partnerships in advancing the health, rights and well-being of young people.

But beyond the achievements and numbers are the stories that matter most: young people who have discovered their voices, developed new skills, challenged long-held beliefs and gained the confidence to shape their own futures.

As we celebrate the successful close of the SAIL-SRHR project, we also celebrate a legacy that will continue through the young people, communities and institutions strengthened by the project.

Thank you to our partners, supporters and, most importantly, the young people who made this journey possible.

The SAIL-SRHR project was implemented by CVC and the Jamaica Family Planning Association with support from Alinea International and was funded by Global Affairs Canada.

CVC has placed its technical expertise at the centre of efforts to strengthen HIV surveillance and the use of data to inform the HIV response in Trinidad and Tobago.

Our Strategic Information Lead, Dr. Sharlene Jarrett, and Strategic Information Coordinator, Janeil Williams, are providing technical support to the Ministry of Health’s four-day HIV Surveillance Capacity Building Training in Port of Spain, alongside technical expertise from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The training brings together healthcare professionals and NGO partners involved in HIV case detection, reporting, data management and programme monitoring. It is focused on strengthening participants’ capacity to collect, manage and use HIV surveillance data to guide public health action, improve programmes and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes. taken in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago by @cvccoalition

Our Executive Director Ivan Cruickshank is participating in crucial discussions in New York with international partners about the UN80 reform process and its potential implications for gender equality, women’s rights, and the sexual and reproductive health and rights response across the region.

CVC's participation and advocacy efforts in these international spaces are critical to ensuring that sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality and women’s rights are protected.

Sexual freedom is Caribbean freedom. 🔥✊🏽

Because you cannot talk about health without talking about power.
You cannot talk about rights without talking about autonomy.
And you cannot talk about justice while some people are still being punished for who they love or how they live their sexuality.

This World Sexual Health Day, the Caribbean Observatory on SRHR is calling for a region where sexual rights are recognised, protected and respected for everyone.

Young people are not just the subjects of research, they're helping to lead it.

Through the Strengthening Access, Inclusion and Leadership for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SAIL-SRHR) Project’s Participatory Action Research initiative, young researchers are being equipped with the skills and support to investigate issues affecting adolescents in their own communities and bring their findings directly to decision-makers.

CVC Programme Officer Andrea Campbell joined young researchers Jada Smith and Jularney Thomas on CVM@Sunrise to discuss their work exploring critical issues affecting Jamaican youth.

Their research reflects the lived realities of their peers and demonstrates why young people must be included not only in conversations about the issues affecting them, but also in shaping the solutions.

Through SAIL-SRHR, we are helping to create spaces where youth-generated evidence can inform programmes, services and approaches that better respond to the needs of adolescents.

🎥 Watch the interview to hear directly from these young researchers about what they discovered and why their voices matter.

The SAIL-SRHR project is implemented by CVC and the Jamaica Family Planning Association with support from Alinea International and is funded by Global Affairs Canada.

Instead of simply conducting research about young people, the SAIL-SRHR Project is putting young Jamaicans at the centre of the research itself.

Andrea Campbell of Caribbean Vulnerable Communities joined young researchers Jada Smith and Jularney Thomas to discuss youth-led research examining gender-based violence, mental health and access to sexual and reproductive health services.

The initiative equips young researchers with skills in leadership, communication, advocacy and critical thinking while creating evidence that can help shape programmes and services designed for their peers.

Safe Sex Summer: Let’s Talk FACTS!

When it comes to sexual health, what you don’t know can affect you. So, let’s clear up a few common myths. 👀

❌ You can’t always tell if someone has an STI.
❌ Oral sex doesn’t mean zero STI risk.
❌ Birth control pills don’t protect against STIs.
❌ Using protection isn’t about distrust—it’s about caring for your health and your partner’s.

This summer, don’t let myths make your decisions for you. Get the facts, communicate with your partners, use the prevention methods that work for you, and make regular STI and HIV testing part of your sexual health routine.

Good vibes. Good choices. Better information.

No symptoms doesn’t always mean no STI.

Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be present without noticeable symptoms. That means you or your partner could have an STI and not know it.

This #SafeSexSummer, make testing part of taking care of yourself.
Know your status, use protection, talk openly with your partners about sexual health, and seek treatment when needed.

Remember: Getting tested isn’t about fear or judgment, it’s about knowing your health and making informed choices.

Have fun. Stay informed. Protect yourself and your partners.

A person living with HIV who is on effective treatment and maintains an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV.

Knowing the facts about U=U helps reduce HIV stigma, supports people living with HIV, and reminds us that treatment is also a powerful form of prevention.

This #SafeSexSummer, let’s replace fear and misinformation with knowledge, confidence and care. Get tested, stay connected to care, and make the sexual health choices that work for you.

Know the facts. Protect your health. Enjoy your summer.
