4 years ago, Ye dropped “Lift Yourself”

Pusha-T and Drake had been beefing with each other since Pusha dropped “Don’t Fuck With Me” in 2011, which warned Drake to stay in his lane: “Rappers on they sophomores / Actin’ like they boss lords.”

Despite this, Pusha’s G.O.O.D. Music honcho, Kanye West, maintained a productive working relationship with Drake, to the point where they briefly teased a collaborative album together — however, after Pusha took more shots at Drake on his Kanye-produced album, DAYTONA, Ye found himself in the cross-fire.

Drake dropped two disses aimed at Ye:

First was “Duppy Freestyle”, claiming: “I’ve done things for him I thought he never would need / Father had to stretch his hands out and get it from me,” followed by “Behind Barz” — he then went on to say “Kanye flopped” on stage at his Chicago Show.

But, Drake’s animus toward Kanye didn’t stem from his involvement in DAYTONA — or at least according to Kanye, who said Drake was actually mad over “Lift Yourself”.

Released in April, ahead of Kanye’s “ye”, “Lift Yourself” is a beat built around a sample from the 1973 soul song “Liberty” by the group Amnesty — it’s an intriguing track, especially considering Kanye’s nonsensical “toilet humor”.

He announced the track using fire emojis to represent the track's "bars", promising to put out a song with a verse that will bring Hot 97 radio disc jockey Ebro Darden "the closure he's been seeking” — a promise made after Darden had criticized West for his right-wing political views.

But in relation to Drake, it seems as though he was either supposed to be on an unreleased proper version of “Lift Yourself”, or intended to use the beat on his own album Scorpion, until Kanye leaked it.

As a result, Kanye said Drake went on texting him purple demon emojis:

As Kanye relayed in an interview with Chicago’s 107.5 WGCI Chicago: “Drake is a person who loves Kanye West, you’re supposed to be protective of that person at all cost and make sure, ‘Bro, are you good?’ It’s not about being selfish, like ‘I wanted to be on the ‘Lift Yourself’ beat and I wasn’t on it, so now I’m mad about it, and now I’m sending you purple demon emojis.'”
