Solid start to bmx in 2026! Landing that 3 tuck was a very big deal - a very long time coming haha. I kind of can’t believe i got a good one. WELCOME TO AL’S MTB PALS CHARLES TYSON!

Al’s Bike Shop is launching a new wave of ambassadors to host rides and other events in the community. We are very proud to represent these ambassadors, as we believe that not only are they key members of the cycling community in Northern Virginia, but people who’s philosophy on riding, inclusivity, and the environment, align with ours.

Who is Charles?

Howdy! My name is Charles and I was born in raised in Fairfax. I live in Richmond now, but I still spend a lot of time visiting friends and riding bikes in the DMV. I am all about maximizing fun while riding - whatever that is for you, I support it! I have ridden BMX for a long time and only got my first mountain bike in 2020, so I tend to gravitate towards jumps, drops, and jibby features. With that said, I love anything two wheels and riding with friends is when I feel the most whole.
Favorite trail:
Hawleywood at Thunder Mountain Bike Park

Favorite Food:
Watermelon, especially refrigerated watermelon after a long day of riding in the summer. I love watermelon man. When I was young, I used to play lacrosse and my favorite thing after a super hot game would be just devouring a cold half of a watermelon.

3-14-2025, Total lunar eclipse

I started astrophotography in high school with the bare necessities. Just an entry level camera and a tripod and some friends. I have always been so fascinated by the night sky and imaging it in a way our eyes cannot naturally see. My first pictures of the moon were pretty terrible but I was still proud. Years later, as I have grown my knowledge (and tool collection, haha) I am able to actually turn image ideas I have had for so many years into reality. I have always wanted to create an image like this - a composite showing the moon slowly fall into place of the Earth's shadow. I fought the cold, a cold, and clouds for several hours but I stayed persistent and created a result that I am very proud of. We are so lucky to experience phenomenons like this; space is unfathomably amazing and ever awe-inspiring. #astrophotography #teamcanon #canon #shotoncanon #lunareclipse by @cwtyson

Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day

I went to Vermont with a very good friend @funkmastershump to buy myself a mountain bike. I truly did not expect how amazing the few days would be. I hope every time I ride this bike I am reminded of how great this short but jam packed trip was. Riding my boring local trails is going to sting even more now lol. I don’t think anyone would be shocked to hear that I am a pretty sentimental person. The first bike trip I ever went on was to The Wheel Mill in December 2015. I somehow convinced my mom to let me get in a car with 4 bmx dudes that she did not know and go on a day trip all the way to Pittsburgh. Through a snowstorm. And to top it off, it was the day after Christmas. Those 4 people were Chase Cleveland, @ridemoretrails , @jacksonholtg , and @eyeheartmods . I did not realize at the time how important this trip was - it planted the seed in my brain for what a bike trip could be. This sounds so simple when taken at face value, but it unlocked a new world of possibilities in my head. Since this first trip I have gone on so many memorable bike trips with so many genuinely great friends to so many great (and sometimes not so great) places. I had no clue what the wheel mill would become for me, how I would still be going on bike trips with these very same people 8+ years later, and all the friends I’d make along the way. And most importantly, how much riding a dang bike would be part of my life.

I really hope the wheel mill gets a resolution to their situation and does not permanently close their doors. But if they do close down, nothing will ever take away the incredible trips I’ve had here with my friends and all the memories this place has created for so many people. I took a moment at the end of the day on Saturday to just ride around the park and look at all the people riding with their friends and family on bmx bikes, dirt jumpers, mountain bikes, even striders. Seeing their smiles and knowing memories like those in my own mind were being created felt like the universe giving me a hug. I went to Vermont on a whim and I rode some bikes and I had a very good time
