My main goal with my cybersecurity course is to teach how cybersecurity professionals THINK and how we go about actually securing environments. Talking about everything from the cybersecurity pillars to security architecture in this course and the first three modules are 100% free so if you’ve had any interest in seeing what cybersecurity is about, go through the first three modules at least. Links in the bio.

Quick networking recap of what I did in opnsense to allow that outbound connection from my homelab! Needed to create the explicit outbound NAT so that my windows computer acting as a router could recognize it and perform another NAT hehe. #cybersecurity #Wazuh #cybersecurityhomelab #learncybersecurity #itprojects taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

Let’s look at what the Wazuh agent is showing us, what info we’re getting, and what kind of Benchmarks it’s automatically looking at. Then we’ll take a peek at some log events we’re already getting! Cybersecurity homelabs are the best ways to learn real world skill especially when it comes to logging and monitoring! #cybersecurity #itprojects #Wazuh #homelabprojects #cybersecurityhomelab taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

We can now run the Wazuh agent install script to pull down the msi file! There’s connectivity between the domain controller and Wazuh so logs should be getting sent. We’ll also confirm in Wazuh that it shows an agent deployed and connected 😁. #cybersecurity #informationtechnology #learncybersecurity #tech #homelab taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

When the Wazuh server got moved to VLAN30, the IP address changed and the gateway was changed to opnsense. My windows computer acting as a router is expecting traffic from the 192.168.1.x range so I have to create some explicit NATs in opnsense to make the traffic pass out to the internet #cybersecurity #informationtechnology #learncybersecurity #homelab #itprojects taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

After we moved the Wazuh server to VLAN30, how do we actually know there’s connectivity between the domain controller and Wazuh? When we install the agent, the agent needs to send traffic back to the collector. Let’s do some pings and netcat to confirm! #cybersecurity #itprojects #informationtechnology #learncybersecurity #homelab taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

We changed the Wazuh server IP address after moving it to VLAN30 but this also meant that I’d no longer be able to browse to it how I have been. So let’s go into opnsense and add a firewall rule to allow my mgmt RHEL VM to browse to Wazuh. Also showing the netplan file to change the IP address of the actual machine (I didn’t set up a DHCP server on the subnets yet lol). #cybersecurity #learncybersecurity #homelab #homelabprojects #itprojects taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

The goal was to immediately start deploying the Wazuh agent but wow did I run into a lot of misconfigurations in my homelab lol. I forgot to actually move my server to VLAN30 but that also means changing the IP address. Also a quick little rant on how making permissions so granular that it negatively affects security and increases the likelihood of misconfigurations with permissions. #cybersecurity #homelab #itprojects #learncybersecurity #informationtechnology taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

Time to start installing the Wazuh agent on an endpoint so we can start collecting logs! Full video will be on YouTube shortly. This was a pretty challenging step because it uncovered a TON of misconfigurations in my homelab, particularly with networking. SO, we’ll talk a lot about networking during these steps as well. If you’re getting into cybersecurity, homelabs are the best ways to simulate real world experience. #cybersecurity #cyber #homelabprojects #itprojects #learncybersecurity taken in Washington, DC by @cyberdarsh

In this video, we’ll run the curl command required to pull the Wazuh install packages and launch the install. Wazuh provides instructions to do this so it’s pretty straight forward. Curl is a fantastic tool that lets us pull packages down from a remote location via terminal. Continuing on our Wazuh open source SIEM install. We have to have somewhere to place the application so we are standing up an Ubuntu server to then install Wazuh on. If you’re getting into cyber security, doing these types of homelab projects will take you very far while simulating real world experience.
