🎮 "Alundra 2: A New Legend Begins".
🧑‍💻 Matrix Software.
🕹️ PlayStation (PSX).

Story-wise, this title isn't really a sequel to "Alundra". The hero of this game is the red-haired Flint, whose parents were killed by pirates. Flint engages himself on a journey to avenge his parents, but soon discovers that there is a bigger conspiracy - the evil Mephisto wants to turn all people into robots by putting magic keys into them.

In contrast to the predecessor, this game's storyline and characters are humorous.

Jump, climb, swim and fight through a fully 3D polygonal world complete with a manually rotatable camera for three scalable views.

Fight real-time action-RPG battles against a slew of mega-bosses and monsters including dive-bombing ravens, giant spiders, skeletons and other freakish creatures.

Revenge and redemption ultimately mix, as individual stories unfold into a final showdown between good and evil.

Hundreds of action-based puzzles greet you in your quest. Some are easy - others are mind numbing - but once you solve them, you'll be ever closer to fulfilling your destiny. You can also collect special puzzle pieces and medals along your journey to upgrade your sword, armor or elemental power.

A thoroughly engaging story along with hours of cinematics, voice-overs and a sweeping score weave together to immerse you in an adventure you'll never forget.

Uncover secret treasures, hidden map locations and special items including magical herbs, rings and amulets. Learn new sword techniques and magic spells as your quest unfolds. The longer you play, the more the world of "Alundra 2" becomes yours.

10+ playable mini-games can be found throughout the adventure, including a RC car game, classic arcade style games and thrilling Casino games where you can win special medals, collectible prizes or ultra-rare items.

🎨 "The Wake".
🧑‍🎨 🇪🇸 José María López Mezquita (1883-1954).
🗓️ 1910.

In his youth, José María López Mezquita (1883–1954) was a frequent participant in major art exhibitions, winning several awards that brought him critical acclaim and prestige.

"The Wake" is a piece that, inevitably, profoundly captivates viewers due to its unusual, raw, and at the very least, jarring subject matter. The painting is inspired by a facet of primitive, rural Spain that still maintained ancestral customs—traditions that have since vanished and are unrecognizable to us today.

This large-scale canvas immerses the viewer in the wake of a Romani child, set inside a cave dwelling—a common form of housing among the Romani population in Granada at the time. Around the coffin, the figures sing, dance, drink, weep, and clap their hands.

In a letter to his friend Josep Clarà, López Mezquita himself described the project he was engrossed in: "I am painting a canvas depicting a Romani custom (a wake), which takes the form of a celebration around the corpse of a young child. The figures are seated in a circle, singing and clapping, while a woman dances and the family, near the body, weeps and pulls their hair. From this description alone, you will understand the array of difficulties it presents in order to avoid it appearing ridiculous or grotesque".

The work serves as an anthropological description, rich in contrasts that confront life and death, joy and grief. Here, tragedy is transformed into a festival; celebration and lamentation fuse. The infant's death and the overarching experience of mortality are expressed in all their inherent drama, yet simultaneously mitigated by a dance that functions as both a raw expression of grief and an affirmation of the body and life itself. Wine and music induce a sense of catharsis among members of the gathering. Scholars attribute this seemingly macabre duality to the traditional belief that the innocent soul of a child—provided they were baptized—ascends directly to heaven upon passing.

🎮 "QUAKE II".
🧑‍💻 HammerHead.
🕹️ PlayStation (PSX).

A sequel in name only, this follow up to id Software's 1996 "QUAKE", is a first-person shooter revolving around the Earth-Strogg war. The Strogg alien race threatens the Earth, but Earth has launched a counter-offensive, Operation Overlord. Overlord takes the battle to the Strogg homeworld with the ultimate objective of securing their capital city and killing their ruler.

The PlayStation version of "QUAKE II" is modified to account for the console's limitations, but also has some unique content. They changed the structure of the levels by dividing them into smaller parts, simplified the three-dimensional enemy models, and added exclusive visual effects for the console (such as lens flares). Additionally, they included a restructured soundtrack composed by Sonic Mayhem compiled for this disc format.

"QUAKE II" for PlayStation contains 20 levels in 5 missions (instead of 39 levels in 10 missions from the original Windows version), with the prologue mission ported over from the Nintendo 64 version, and the fourth mission requiring the player to destroy the Gravity Booster that is not present in any other version of the game.

It also replaces the intro and ending cinematics with those of "Quake II Mission Pack: Ground Zero" (the second official mission pack for the Windows version released in 1998) as well as new unit cutscenes, but the main story is largely the same as that of the Windows original.

Two new enemies are present - the Arachnid and the Guardian, while some enemies make fewer appearances or are cut entirely. Multiplayer for up to 4 players is available.

📸 "End of Terror".
🧑‍🎨 🇵🇱 Unknown (Polish Press War Correspondents / PSW).
🗓️ August 1944.

During the opening weeks of the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944, the Polish capital became the stage for an open revolt against years of brutal German occupation.

Captured by an unknown photographer operating under the Press War Correspondents (PSW) agency of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), this historical photograph, titled "End of Terror," documents a powerful act of defiance.

The image depicts the burning portraits of Adolf Hitler in a liberated area of the city. By consigning these official likenesses of the Nazi leader to the flames, the resistance visually and symbolically declared the collapse of the totalitarian machinery that had subjugated Poland since 1939.

Despite this initial fervor, the Warsaw Uprising ultimately ended in a tragic defeat for the insurgents. Following 63 days of heroic yet desperate combat sustained with virtually no outside assistance, the Polish resistance was forced to capitulate on October 2, 1944, overwhelmed by German military superiority.

A critical factor in this outcome was the Soviet geopolitical strategy: the Red Army halted its advance directly across the Vistula River, refusing to intervene or to allow Allied aircraft to use Soviet airfields for supply drops. This deliberate inaction allowed Nazi forces to methodically crush the uprising and systematically liquidate Poland's nationalist leaders, a move that subsequently facilitated Soviet communist control over the country after the war.

Following the capitulation, and under direct orders from Heinrich Himmler, German forces carried out the systematic demolition of approximately 85% of Warsaw. The human cost of the 63-day struggle was catastrophic, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 150,000 to 250,000 civilians—many of whom perished in mass executions such as the Wola massacre—alongside approximately 16,000 to 18,000 fallen resistance fighters.

This photograph stands as a poignant testament to a fleeting moment of liberation during one of the most tragic chapters of the Second World War.

🎮 "QUAKE II".
🧑‍💻 Raster Productions.
🕹️ Nintendo 64 (N64).

This version of "QUAKE II" differs from the other releases from PC or PlayStation by replacing most of the levels with new ones.

Developed by Raster Productions, this unique Nintendo 64 port features a standalone campaign of 20 exclusive stages set during humanity's desperate counter-offensive, Operation Alien Overlord.

In this timeline, players control a Marine Special Operations soldier named Viper, who is dropped behind enemy lines on a high-stakes reconnaissance mission to dismantle the Strogg, a hostile, warlike cybernetic alien race that has been brutally raiding Earth for its resources.

The Strogg are infamous for a gruesome process known as "stroggification", in which they forcefully mutilate captured human soldiers and other species, replacing their body parts with mechanical enhancements and cybernetic weaponry to expand their own brainwashed military force.

Some of the levels have familiar themes or even re-create the original ones closely; however, new stages are dominant, tending to be significantly shorter than those of the PC version. This release also features additional graphical effects, such as enhanced real-time lighting during gunfire, which dynamically utilized the N64 Expansion Pak.

Multiplayer for up to four participants is included, offering split-screen action across dedicated modes like Deathmatch, Fragteams, Flagwars, and Deathtag. To fit the console's hardware limitations, certain enemies and bosses from the PC original were removed, and weapon animations relied on 2D sprites.

Additionally, the fast-paced industrial metal soundtrack of the original PC game composed by Sonic Mayhem was replaced by a dark, ambient, and atmospheric score composed by Aubrey Hodges, who also composed the soundtrack for the first "QUAKE" game on Nintendo 64.

🎮 "QUAKE".
🧑‍💻 Lobotomy Software.
🕹️ Sega Saturn (SS).

An enemy with the codename ''Quake'', which is believed to come from another dimension, is using teleporter gates to invade Earth. The player takes the role of a nameless Ranger who arrives at his base only to find out Quake has overrun it and killed everyone. Somewhere in the base there must be a teleporter to Quake's realm. The mission is clear: take the fight to the enemy, overcoming countless hordes of monsters, and exact revenge.

id Software's followup to "DOOM" and "DOOM II", "QUAKE" is a first-person shooter. Its main technological innovation is the use of a true 3D engine - the levels themselves as well as the enemies are polygonal.

The Saturn's processor was notoriously complex to program due to its dual-CPU architecture, which is why Lobotomy Software decided to remake the game from scratch. They completely abandoned John Carmack's original engine (which performed terribly on the console) and used their own graphic engine called SlaveDriver. Thanks to this technical feat, they managed to create one of the smoothest and most stunning true 3D ports of that entire generation. However, there is an absolute absence of multiplayer modes, neither split-screen nor support for the console's NetLink modem.

The theme of the levels, enemies, and weapons in "QUAKE" is not so easily pinpointed. While each episode begins in a futuristic military base (with a technological "slipgate" as the level exit), later levels take place in environments inspired by medieval fantasy and gothic horror (castles, dungeons and caverns) and the player passes through magical portals to advance.

The enemies conform to the mishmash of designs: there are human opponents armed with shotguns and energy weapons in the early levels, while the later levels include medieval knights, ghosts, zombies, ogres (armed with grenade launchers and chainsaws) and some more unearthly beasts.

🎨 "Adam and Eve Finding the Dead Body of Abel".
🧑‍🎨 🇮🇹 Natale Carta (1790-1884 or 1800-1888).
🗓️ 1869.

In this tragic Old Testament story, Adam and Eve discover the lifeless body of their second son, Abel, who has been murdered by their firstborn son, Cain. At the left beneath Adam's leg is the murder weapon, a thorny stick, and a trail of blood.

This work is finely painted in the neoclassical manner by Natale Carta, a Sicilian-born artist who rose to prominence in Rome in the mid nineteenth century. Carta was elected to the Academy of St Luke (the artists' guild) in 1839, then appointed Professor of Painting in 1848 and Professor of Design in 1868.

🎨 "Summer Time".
🧑‍🎨 🇦🇺 Rupert Bunny (1864-1947).
🗓️ ca. 1907.

"Summer Time" magnificently demonstrates Rupert Bunny's skill as a draughtsman and his masterful handling of large-scale composition.

Set inside a semi-private, floating bathhouse on the Seine—a popular structure of the era designed to shield women from public view while allowing outdoor bathing—the composition features seven statuesque and graceful women in various stages of repose, bathing, and dressing, epitomising the leisured spirit of the "Belle Époque". An eighth figure, a black maid or attendant braiding the hair of one of the bathers, grounds the scene in the classical artistic tradition of the Orientalist bather and the luxury of the era's elite.

In an impressive feat of conceptualization, Bunny used his French wife and muse, Jeanne Morel, as the sole model for all seven figures, multiplying her form to construct a rich, continuous narrative of afternoon relaxation.

The scenes unfold seamlessly across the canvas, with women lounging on draped fabrics, sipping iced tea, and holding freshly cut roses. The closed, intimate environment functions as an architectural enclosure that evokes a quiet sensuality and vulnerability, building on a legacy of classical bathing motifs that stretch back to the Renaissance.

When debuted at the New Salon (Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts) in Paris in 1907, "Summer Time" solidified Bunny's international status as a prominent colorist capable of translating fleeting modern pleasures into timeless academic scales.
