Excited to share another mix with you all! This one out with @hannah.d.__ Rotations series on @tsbu__ A massive ty to her for having me on to contribute some tacks :)

Its not often that I’ve found myself with the time to carefully curate something like this which explores a lot of what has and continues to influence my own sound.

The mix is a gentle meander across a number of genres from Downtempo, Deep Tech, 90’s Tech House and finally arriving at some Leftfield and Progressive. Hopefully something for everyone in this - swipe through for tracklisting and some snipppppets.

Cybernet throws down this Saturday. We caught up to chat about the shift from listener to producer, the craft behind his studio process, the parallels between architecture and music, and his forthcoming release Aurora’s Embrace at Solace next month. cs: What was your introduction to music more broadly? Did you study it at school and learn instruments growing up? When did it turn electronic?

cybernet: I first started learning cello when I was about five and played until I was around sixteen, so a good ten years. I was also playing in orchestras all the way through school. A few years after turning eighteen I started getting into Melbourne’s underground club culture, and I guess the story starts from there.

cs: Producing is central to your identity as an artist. Was there a specific moment you were pushed from listener to maker?

c: I remember hearing Fantastic Man for the first time at Xe54 in Southbank and just being totally blown away by the different music on offer in the electronic scene. It felt like there was something more out there for me to explore. I’d spent my whole life learning, and I think that was the moment I realised I wanted to channel that into something more personal.

cs: Hearing “Lights on the Eucalyptus” dropped at Kilometre 25 in Paris was one of the coolest moments. How does it feel when another artist plays your track out or jumps on to remix it? Does it change how you hear your own work?

c: When you hear other people playing your music, it gives you a huge amount of satisfaction. You spend so many hours working on a track so it’s always heartwarming to see. I don’t often play out my own music, so hearing someone else do it gives me a different perspective. I’m usually quite close-minded about my own tracks because I’ve heard them so many times. Seeing other people enjoy them definitely helps me step outside that.

cs: You became known early for those trancey, proggy textures. What are you inspired by now? How would you describe your early sound compared to what you’re exploring now?

With a diverse set of musical experience formed over nearly a decade, Naarm (Melbourne) local Cybernet possesses an almost natural ability to craft soundscapes that fuse elements spanning a plethora of genres.

As both a DJ and producer, Cybernet’s sound pays reference to the landscape of current and old school 90s/00’s progressive and trance, carving out a niche in capturing the euphoric emotions of late-night dance floors.

Cybernet’s core production identity revolves around open mindedness; particularly in the way that he draws upon music from a wide array of genres to subsequently create something in his own unique style. It’s an approach that has been tangibly important in the way that he designs & arranges his tracks, whilst ensuring that the process remains fresh and invigorating at all times.

This willingness to carefully find and craft the right emotion on the dance floor is also expressed throughout his DJ sets, with Cybernet bringing a diverse bag of tracks to the table that roll through progressive, tech-house, trance and breaks alike. The release of the 4-track ‘Druid’ EP on Steffan Todorovic’s (1/2 of Abdul Raeva) Gestalt imprint in 2022 launched Cybernet onto the thriving and globally renowned Melbourne progressive scene. Followed up in 2024 on Gestalt CD sub-label Diskount Service with ‘Key to Equilibrium’, each release displays a collection of different takes on both old and new style progressive trance, underscored by heavier driving
basslines that are traditionally heard in old school Goa and Hardtrance tracks. With a core influence of his sound and journey having been formed by the local Bush-Doof and rave scene, these sounds and high-tempo energies have been carefully weaved into his own unique style.

With a constantly evolving sound palette, Cybernet has regularly contributed to compilations across labels local and abroad – notably; Meganesia (AU) Club Elevate (AU) GODDEZZ (UK) Neptune Discs (UK) Piff (UK)
and Durum Records (FR).

Undoubtedly grounded by a passion for making music and the honing of his true musical taste, Cybernet’s contribution to the scene is set to reach even further heights. by @cybernet_303
