Cock Wellness Center — part 2. More from the series: a full wellness institution for fighting cocks — herbal medicine, rehab training, sound healing, red light therapy, private culinary care. The best of care and comfort, until the arena decides otherwise. #CockWellnessCenter #Artwork #NewWork Cock Wellness Center — part 2. Oh my goodness, this was such an incredible time! Getting to work with Jas Lin was such a dream come true! And on top of that getting to meet and work with other incredible artist like Henry, Piramon, Peachiia, and more! I was over the moon, still am! The process was a lot of fun even though time was of the essence. Thank you Jas for thinking about me for this project and thank you Henry and team for having me be a part of your beautiful work!

I need to gush about the accessibility, it was truly incredible. I felt so held as an artist and I am appreciative of how things that I normally do as a disabled person was seen as labor and to have those needs taken care was amazing! Thank you Meredith @meredeet_rojay , Megan @monamantia and the entire Fathomer team for being on top of those details! More of that energy please.

Henry Tan #Pickedby Kawita Vatanajyankur

Based in Bangkok, Henry Tan @cyberotic works at the intersection of art, biology, and engineering, exploring how life adapts to technological, environmental, and geopolitical change. His multidisciplinary practice engages with synthetic biology, brain stimulation, mixed reality, and artificial intelligence. Through collaborations with scientists, engineers, and performers, Tan creates spaces that invite rest, reflection, and the reimagining of life within technological systems.

“Henry Tan was the one who first inspired me to explore the use of EMS and other scientific mediums in my practice. His research constantly challenges the boundaries between ethics and possibility, between what is known and what might exist beyond. He recently worked on cultivating a human brain from stem cells—an experiment that raises profound questions about consciousness and the meaning of being. He often speaks about how to ‘feed’ the brain and how electricity might one day bridge the gap between matter and mind.” - Kawita Vatanajyankur @kawitav

In the final week of the Emergence, artists Henry Tan and Masato Takemura held a Cell Memorial Service in the gallery of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. Tan and Takemura were joined by Monk Sogen of the Rinzai-Ji Zen Center; together they offered a farewell to the departed and a celebration of the living in honor of the organoids, tissues, yeasts, and plants that lived in the gallery for the duration of the show.

“I had the privilege of working closely with Tan and Takemura throughout this process. As part of our preparatory research, we visited religious spaces in and near Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, where Emergence was on view. We talked with leaders and practitioners of various Buddhist lineages to understand their philosophical approaches to synthetic biology and explore how we might frame such discussions for the local community,” reflects Annie Zeng, Programs Manager. “Tan and Takemura were particularly interested in how religious traditions understand life and death, how these conceptions might change with the creation of artificial life via synthetic biology, and how synthetic biology could contribute to new philosophies of consciousness. We were humbled by the challenges of navigating worldviews between religion, science, and art.”

At the close of Emergence, the exhibition’s living biological materials were safely disposed of according to standard BSL-II lab protocols. Tan and Takemura’s Cell Memorial Service extended an expression of gratitude for these living tissues and an opportunity to contemplate how we engage with and use life, from cellular-scale organisms, to our own bodies and minds, to the unknown life forms of the future.

This "Tourbillion Demential Clock" is a poignant metaphor for the passage of time and the fragility of memory. Like Brahma's hand holding rosary beads, symbolizing the cyclical nature of creation and the preciousness of each moment, this intricate timepiece strives for ultimate precision. The tourbillon mechanism, a marvel of horological engineering, constantly rotates the escapement to counteract the effects of gravity, ensuring the most accurate timekeeping possible. However, intertwined with this pursuit of precision is the "dementia clock," inspired by the cognitive assessment where patients draw a clock with distorted hands, reflecting the gradual erosion of memory and the loss of temporal orientation. This poignant juxtaposition serves as a reminder that even as we strive to conquer time, our own perception of it, and our ability to grasp its fleeting nature, may ultimately be lost.

This brain organoid incubator, a cradle for nascent neural structures, finds its profound inspiration in the hand of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. Just as Brahma's hand cradles the bowl of cosmic energy, this device nurtures the burgeoning complexity of miniature brains. Within this controlled environment, the intricate dance of neural development unfolds, mirroring the cosmic forces that give rise to consciousness itself. This technology allows us to witness the genesis of intelligence, a testament to the awe-inspiring power of creation.
