Fishergirl knitting.

Photograph for my final MA Historical Costume project - an exploration of working-class dress in coastal North Yorkshire ca.1840-1900, and of material culture related to domestic textile provision and the life cycle of clothing.

Alongside a written piece, I designed and made this late nineteenth-century working woman’s outfit, combining aspects of reconstruction and reinterpretation. I also experimented with traditional patterns for and method for making a fisherman’s gansey. I wanted to have pictures of the ensemble in context and inspired by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, whose photographs had been constant reference points throughout my research.

Thank you to the Textile Society @the_textile_society , the Costume Society @costume_society , Whitby Museum @whitbymuseum , the Knitting and Crochet Guild @kcguild , Lucy Adlington @historywardrobe and the staff and my fellow students on @aubhistcostume for their support.

Beautiful 1940s wedding dress at Blandford Fashion Museum. Finally getting around to posting the rest of my photos - this was my favourite piece in their exhibition of 20th century bridal fashions. It’s such an elegant silhouette - I loved seeing the photos of brides wearing the dresses too. #bridalfashion #1940sweddingdresses by @cyclingsuitsandshenanigans

Another beauty in Blandford Fashion Museum - 1850s printed cotton with tiered skirt and ruffle details on the bodice. I love this fabric! 🪡 #1850sfashion #fashionhistory #blandfordfashionmuseum by @cyclingsuitsandshenanigans

Some of the stunning pieces on display in the first part of Power Dressing: The Powerful Silhouette at Blandford Fashion Museum. Working on an 1830s costume commission at the moment - today is chemisette day. I’m adapting a couple of patterns from Patterns of Fashion and have just done some machine embroidery to add some detail to this collar. More updates to come 🪡 by @cyclingsuitsandshenanigans

V&A T.168&A-1915. 1830s dress in printed cotton - beautiful fabric beautifully sewn. Those tiny cartridge pleats, the interesting sleeve design, delicate piping and broderie-anglais trim! So much to love and a very interesting study during my V&A Order an Object appointment. #vamuseum #vaeast #orderanobject #1830sfashion by @cyclingsuitsandshenanigans
