What an inspiring conversation with Cynt Marshall, whose career has redefined what inclusive leadership looks like at the highest levels.

As the first Black woman to serve as CEO of an NBA team, she helped transform the culture at the Dallas Mavericks. Earlier in her career, as Senior Vice President of HR and Chief Diversity Officer at AT&T, her leadership played a key role in earning the company recognition on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list.

Now, through Marshalling Resources, she continues to help organizations lead with purpose, build inclusive cultures, and drive meaningful change. Grateful for the insights, candor, and inspiration she shared with our community.

Hello, beautiful people!

I hope you are enjoying summer and all the warmth it brings. As in life, summer brings thunderstorms too.

This latest episode of the My Two Cynts About the Good Stuff podcast was taped last month during National Cancer Survivors month (see link in bio). We talked about the thunderstorm that hits when one is diagnosed with cancer. And we dug into the warm way to come alongside a loved one who is facing the disease.

I was so happy to have Dr. Connie Bell, my dear sister-friend and author of her newly released memoir Shades of Strength, and humanitarian Cheryl “Action” Jackson join me for a very personal conversation about fighting cancer. We discussed the importance of self-advocacy, leaning on our support system, protecting our peace, and living with purpose after cancer.

July 6, 1981, was a very special day for me. I started my professional career that day - 45 years ago at Pacific Bell, a subsidiary of AT&T. My first job was as a Group Manager in Operator Services.

During my 13,088 days at AT&T, I had the pleasure of taking on 15 different jobs. Technical or nontechnical, line or staff, California, North Carolina, or Texas - I loved every job and every location and learned something valuable in each one. Some lessons were painful and taught me how to trust God when I couldn’t trust people, but I genuinely believe that every experience made me a better leader, and thousands of people helped me to become a better person. While I learned something key and developed specific skills in every job, the most important insight came from my overall career. I learned how important it is to LISTEN to people, LEARN from people, and LOVE people. You’ll read more about the 3Ls of leadership in my new book next year; you can probably imagine that the title will have something to do with people.

So, 45 years later, I am reflecting on the things I’ve learned, friends I’ve made, places I’ve lived, and people who touched me as a result of my employment with AT&T, the Dallas Mavericks, and my own company, Marshalling Resources. I pray that I left every place better than I found it. After all, that’s what a leader is supposed to do: serve the people and leave the place better. I’m not 21 years old any more, but I’m still excited about and grateful for the opportunity to touch lives, marshal the resources, and help people achieve their dreams. Today, July 1, 2026, is one of the proudest days of my professional career and it has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with Karen S. Carter, Jim Fitterling, and the board of directors of Dow (formerly known as Dow Chemical).

Effective TODAY, Karen S. Carter succeeds Jim Fitterling as the CEO of Dow. I am so proud of this sister.

Over the past nine years, I’ve had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with Karen. She is a remarkable leader, scary smart, and a kind and compassionate human being.

Congratulations to Jim Fitterling and the Dow Board of Directors for this phenomenal appointment. Dow continues to be in great hands! by @cyntgm

Hello, beautiful people! June is National Cancer Survivors month. I’m blessed to be in the number.

For some strange reason, one of the first things I did when I was diagnosed with colon cancer was focus on the first three letters of that dreaded six letter word. Hearing the word “cancer” sent me into an out-of-body experience. I knew the doctor was NOT talking to me. I backed away from the phone and tried my best to not hear my doctor’s voice. However, seeing the word invoked a different response.

My doctor warned me that he had “bad and significant” news. As I began to make notes on our conversation, I wrote “You have cancer. It’s in your lymph nodes and blood vessels.” It was easier to write the word than hear it. I stared at cancer, in more ways than one. As I repeatedly looked at the word, I leaned in. All I could see were the first three letters…CAN.

At that moment, I decided that I CAN fight this. I CAN beat this. I CAN tell people. I CAN rely on others. I CAN endure chemotherapy. I CAN live.

So, 15 years later, I still focus on the “can” in cancer. I can write about it. I can talk to you about it. I can celebrate the battle. I can appreciate the lessons I learned during every round of chemo. I can show up for others. I can advocate for screenings. I can encourage others through their battle. I can tell others, “You’ve been chosen!”

I am a cancer survivor. My husband is a recent cancer survivor. Some of us will survive it on the earthly side. Others, like my oldest brother, will say goodbye to it as they transition to Heaven.

For me, cancer was a comma in my story, not a period. Yes, I still get episodes of neuropathy. My taste buds are not what they used to be. The bald spot on my scalp is barely noticeable. You’ll be looking for it now. 😂

To all of the cancer survivors out there, we’re still standing. And we CAN enjoy life with a few lingering chemo symptoms and a whole lot of gratitude. Happy National Cancer Survivors month. Enjoy this pic from Touched By Cancer magazine, around 2012. #Chosen by @cyntgm

Happy 34th birthday @kennethanthony! For part 1 of the birthday message I thought I’d go waaaaaay back to that special adoption day. He knew something wonderful was happening and we did too. It has been a pleasure to be his mom and dad. Ant is all about his faith, family, friends and fun. He has an incredible work ethic and handles his business. Ant is a model for how to guard your peace. He is NO DRAMA Mr. Marshall. Ant loves the Lord and loves you too. June 5th is a day of celebration. We praise God for blessing Ant in remarkable ways.
