What a year it’s been?!

Thankful for the lessons learnt. Some tough ones but the lesson learned.

So many are facing challenging times and loss. Huge loss. Let’s be kinder. Now more than ever, choose kindness. The world needs it. And a gentle reminder once again to land on Grace.

As we close 2022, thank you to my family and friends that have been consistent and supportive through the year. To my work colleagues and those I’ve been able to do amazing projects with, publications I’ve contributed to, panels I’ve sat on or moderated, and even the one missed, thank you for the opportunity and trust in me. It’s been a blessing. Looking forward to more exciting things in 2023!

Something that stuck with me throughout this year is from a teaching by Cindy Trimm. I’d love to share this with you in the hopes that it inspires you:

‘The most expensive real estate there is, is the mind. Pay attention to your thoughts and ideas and put action to it’.

✅Intentionality moves you into the realm of risk
✅Next level thinking
✅Go to the next level
✅Do not limit beliefs

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my precious sister @carol.moodley ❤️

You know the chapters of my life that no photograph could ever capture. You have been part of my story from the very beginning, through every change and every season. And through it all, I have always been your ‘baby’ brother.

There is something so comforting about being loved by someone who remembers where you began.
I love how you love Jesus. How you bring the people you care about before Him in prayer. How you love Rodney and @tasania_ and somehow still have plenty of love left for Skylar and Storm, who undoubtedly believe they run the household! 😜🐾

And then there is the way you love me. The checking in. The prayers. The memes that arrive when I need a laugh. The reassurance of knowing I have someone I can trust with both my joy and my worries.

Since Mum and Dad changed addresses, having you beside me has meant more than I could ever put into a birthday post. I treasure the memories we share.

My prayer for you this year is that you feel cared for as deeply as you care for others. That Jesus meets you in the things you have quietly been praying about. That there is rest for you, laughter around your table and lovely surprises you didn’t have to plan yourself.

I wish Mum and Dad were here to celebrate you with us. I would have so much to tell them about the woman you are and how faithfully you have loved your brother.

Of all the things I could say today, this is the one I most want you to know: I thank God for you, Carol. For your life, your heart and the privilege of growing older with you as my sister.

All my love,
Your brother, Cyril ❤️ by @cyrilnaicker

I’ve coordinated weddings, hosted conversations and stood on stages to speak. But Saturday was the first time I had the privilege of being a wedding MC.

It meant even more because it was for Chantelle and David, in a room filled with friends I’ve known for over a decade. I’ve watched some of these friendships grow through years of ordinary days, and then had the joy of seeing everyone gather for one extraordinary one!

There are moments at a wedding that stay with you: the vows, the words spoken by family, the look on someone’s face when they realise just how deeply they are loved. Saturday held so many of them.

And then we danced. I stepped off the dance floor for wedding cake once or twice, but I kept finding my way back to the dance floor, where we stayed well into the morning!🕺

Chantelle and David, thank you for trusting me with a small part of your day. It was beautiful to celebrate your marriage and to witness the love that surrounds you both. May that love continue to make room for joy, friendship and a lifetime of dancing!❤️ by @cyrilnaicker

Repost from @womani_sa

Luxury has never been only about what something costs. It is also about what we have learned to recognise as valuable.

For generations, fashion has taught us to associate luxury with certain places, names, materials and markers of exclusivity. But those associations are shifting.

In my piece for WOMANI, Rewriting the Rules of Value, I explore what happens when the way we recognise luxury begins to change and what African fashion reveals about that shift.

‘The weakest ink is better than the strongest memory.’
One of my Dad’s sayings. And perhaps that is why I write.
I’ve been speaking about you often lately, Dad. But the truth is, I have never really stopped speaking about you. Your name finds its way into conversations, your stories are retold, and your words still surface at the most unexpected moments.

I think of you every day.

And as I’ve grown older, something quite beautiful has happened: I see more of you in me.
In the way I think. In the things I value. In my faith. In how deeply family matters. In the importance I place on doing things properly, keeping my word and leaving something of worth behind.
And when Carol tells me, “You’re just like Dad,” I receive it as one of the greatest compliments she could ever give me.

You taught us much, Dad, sometimes around a table, sometimes through the way you lived, and sometimes in those sentences that became part of the language of our family.

One I will never forget:
‘Are your bags packed? Are you ready, should the Lord tarry today?’
At the time, they were words from a father determined that his children understood that this life was never all there is. Today, they carry even greater meaning.

You left us on 5 June 2012, but you never really left the lives you shaped.
Had you been here, today we would have celebrated your 81st birthday.

Instead, I celebrate the privilege of having been your son.
Happy birthday, Dad.
You are remembered.
You are spoken of.
You are missed more deeply than words can adequately say.
And your legacy lives, not only in photographs and memories, but in us.

I hope that in the man I continue to become, there will always be something of the man you were! ❤️ by @cyrilnaicker

With Céline Dion’s return to Paris making headlines, and my Instagram feed filled with moments from her performance in Paris last night, this memory from 2008 feels especially worth revisiting.

26 February 2008. Cape Town.
I was working for Charlotte Rhys at the time and happened to be walking past Browns when I glanced inside and saw Céline Dion, quietly shopping with her late mother and sister.

I didn’t approach her. She was enjoying a private moment with her family, and it felt important to respect that. What happened next has stayed with me all these years.

Her bodyguards noticed me, called me over and, in an extraordinary act of kindness, offered to take this photograph.

There was Céline, no makeup, no fuss, simply beautiful, gracious and incredibly kind.

Almost two decades later, it isn’t simply meeting one of the world’s greatest voices that I remember most. It’s the kindness of the moment.

The fact that I chose not to intrude, and that somehow, through the thoughtfulness of those around her, the moment found me anyway.

I’m pictured here with my Charlotte Rhys colleague Layla, alongside members of the Browns team. Sadly, I never got the name of the bodyguard who took the photograph, but I’ve never forgotten his kindness.

Some memories don’t need to be planned or staged. They simply find you! ❤️ by @cyrilnaicker

August has always held a special place in my heart.

This year, it marked my 50th birthday. But as the month came to a close, I realised the greatest gift wasn’t reaching a milestone.

It was the people.

The conversations.
The shared meals.
The unexpected surprises.
The laughter.
The flowers.
The long walks.
The quiet moments.
The extraordinary generosity of family and friends.

The calendar has turned, but the celebration of this season continues.

August also ended with the remembrance of my parents’ 58 years of marriage. Though they are no longer here, their love, values and example continue to shape my life. Their legacy reminds me that the most meaningful lives are not always the loudest - they are the ones that leave love behind.

This month has reminded me to live with eternity in mind.
To measure our days not by how busy we were or how much we achieved, but by the lives we touched...
The conversations we had.
The encouragement we gave.
The kindness we showed.
The hope we left behind.

In the end, our greatest legacy will never be what we accomplished, but how deeply we loved, encouraged and valued the people entrusted to our lives.

To every person who celebrated with me, sent a message, shared a meal, prayed, laughed, encouraged me, or simply walked part of this journey with me, thank you.

You made turning fifty one of the richest seasons of my life.

Here’s to choosing, every single day, to live in a way that echoes far beyond ourselves. by @cyrilnaicker

58 Years of Love, Faith and Legacy❤️

Today, my parents would have celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Though both of you are no longer here, your love story continues to shape my life in ways words can scarcely express. You showed me that love is built through faithfulness, sacrifice, grace and choosing one another, day after day, year after year.

Thank you for the home you created, the values you instilled, and the unwavering faith that anchored your lives. So much of who I am today is because of the foundation you laid with quiet strength, generous hearts and steadfast love.

There isn’t a day that passes without thinking of you both. I miss your voices, your laughter and your presence, but I remain deeply grateful for the years we shared and the legacy you left behind. Love like yours doesn’t end, it lives on in the lives you touched and in the hearts of those who were blessed to know you.

Today I celebrate not only your wedding anniversary, but a beautiful covenant that continues to inspire me.

Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever in my heart. ❤️ by @cyrilnaicker

Remembering Cass Abrahams ❤️

On this Women’s Day, it feels especially poignant to honour the life of Cass Abrahams, a remarkable woman whose legacy is woven into the story of South African food, culture and heritage.

My memories of Cass are deeply personal. I had the privilege of eating in her home, sharing her table and, rather dauntingly, having my own cooking judged by her! Those are memories I treasure even more today.

Cass understood that food was never simply food. Every spice, recipe and meal carried history, stories of family, identity, displacement, resilience and generations of women who preserved culture around their tables. She took that inheritance and ensured those stories would be documented, celebrated and passed on.

How fitting, then, on Women’s Day, to remember a woman who spent so much of her life preserving the stories of those who came before her.

Rest well, Cass. Thank you for the meals, the lessons, the laughter and the memories. The stories you preserved, the heritage you honoured and the memories you created will continue to live on for generations!🇿🇦

Birthday Celebration #3. ✨

Some places quietly become part of your story.

@cozco.mediterranean holds a special place in my heart. It was where I celebrated my birthday last year, so returning tonight felt like revisiting a beautiful memory while creating new ones.

This was an intimate evening around the table, filled with genuine friendship, heartfelt conversation. Those are often the moments that stay with us the longest.
A special thank you to Natasha, whose warmth, attention to detail and incredible hospitality always make every visit feel so special. You have a remarkable gift for making people feel at home.

And to Cecilia, thank you for hosting such a beautiful evening. Your generosity, kindness and thoughtfulness made this celebration one I’ll treasure. Thank you, Gary, for your quiet generosity, warm friendship, and for making the evening so memorable. Your kindness never goes unnoticed, and I truly appreciate you.

Another birthday. Another reminder that life is richest when it’s shared with people who become family! ❤️ by @cyrilnaicker

Every superhero needs an origin story... mine just came with cupcakes! 🧁 thank you @corli81

I’ve loved Spider-Man for as long as I can remember. Not because of the costume, but because he reminds us that courage, responsibility and hope are choices we make every day.

So when these amazing cupcakes, balloon and birthday sash appeared, my inner child was absolutely delighted 🤩

Thank you to the incredible friends who made this evening so memorable. You reminded me that the greatest gifts are never the decorations or desserts, they’re the people who celebrate life’s milestones alongside you.

Here’s to fifty... with faith as my superpower and gratitude in my heart. ❤️ by @cyrilnaicker
