There are few venues more iconic than the @sydneyoperahouse.

The venue’s Studio Parties have run for over a decade and long acted as not only a platform for local promoters, but a rite of passage for them too.

To reflect on this year’s celebration, what it means for their city’s culture and their hopes for the future commercial successes of the music and people they hold so dear, Mixmag ANZ caught up with @d._street, @dunj_crew, @trackwork_ & @barneykatokato to reflect on this year’s series.

In light of the ongoing campaign to expose Vivid Sydney’s partnership with Airbnb, a company that activists claim is ‘artwashing apartheid’, their thoughts also explore the influence that global brands can have on local music communities.

Only 2 sleeps until we welcome the incredible Sunju Hargun to Eora for our studio party at the Sydney Opera House. Sunju has been a vibrant force in the Asian underground for more than 20 years. He transcends musical and cultural borders to bring everything from, warm and percussive tribal grooves to more psychedelic sounds, acid textures and mind altering techno.

This has led him to play at renowned clubs and festivals such as Dekmantel, Horst,
Organik, Monument, Panorama Bar, Houghton, and previously De School.

The launch of his imprint collective, Siamese Twins Records, has paved him as a sought-after producer under various aliases. His talent for blending stories from past and present Asian cultures showcases a profound connection and fascination with his multicultural heritage.

We’ve been working to get Sunju to this part of the world for quite some time and are so so excited to welcome one of our favourite artists to this iconic venue this weekend. Trust us, this is not one to miss!! by @d._street

DJ MARIA. is undoubtedly one of the most exciting rising stars in the psychedelic techno scene. Completely captivating in the way she weaves tapestries of trance, techno, acid and ambient into rich soundscapes. Through her craft, she guides audiences into the boundless depths of sound, embodying the transformative power of music.

She helps run two boutique forest festivals—Moment and Transcendence—both of which play a big part in upholding Japan’s storied deep techno tradition.

Maria made her breakthrough in Europe last year with sets at major spaces like Bassiani, FOLD. public records and the psychedelic festival Monument. Although she’s only been djing since 2014, she’s already in leagues with Japanese legends Wata Igarashi and DJ Nobu. But her love of dance music runs deep. She discovered electronic music as a 13-year-old, captivated by DVDs of legendary psytrance raves in Japan.

Her productions are bold yet restrained and hit deep, drifting between hypnotic psychedelia and high-intensity techno with nods to 90s rave.

Producer, DJ and co-founder of Siamese Twins Records, Thailand-based Sunju Hargun has emerged as a vibrant force in the Asian underground music landscape, pushing the movement across Bangkok, Southeast Asia and beyond and platforming emerging Asian artists. With over fifteen years devoted to the craft, his taste can be described as “forward-thinking with past feelings,” operating in the field of psychedelic influences filed under acid, minimal, deep trance, techno, and ambient — into timeless passages across mind, body, and space. Incorporating a strong sense of storytelling that engages body and mind, capturing audiences around the world.
