Graduation resonates with me on a deeper level this time around. Take a moment with me🫶🏽

My father became a 3-time alum of U of I, earning his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Juris Doctor’s degrees! He was also part of campus history through Project 500 — a movement that brought 565 African American and Latino students to the university to expand access and equity in education. This helped lead to institutions like the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center and the Office of Minority Student Affairs, both of which my peers and I have benefited from. It fills me with pride to know my father helped pave the way for us and generations to come. Wearing his sweatshirt, I took pics by the landmark!

In April 2017, my daddy was taken from me by gun violence when I was 14 years old, one month shy of my 8th grade graduation. The most heartbreaking time of my life. I remember struggling to smile and just get through the days. I often thought of how my kindergarten graduation was the last time he saw me cross a stage. But when I took my first steps on campus in August 2021, I felt his presence immediately. He called me “Bunny,” so when I see a bunny on campus, it’s my sign that he’s with me, bringing me comfort. I’ve always known I’d make it through this and whatever else comes my way.

Most days yall see me smiling but trust, I still have my rough ones too. So this is a hugee milestone for me because despite the hard times and tears I’ve shed, I will soon be a college graduate and a proud UIUC legacy!

Many in my shoes don’t make it this far, so I’m BEYOND proud of myself for persevering through every hardship with immeasurable strength. I couldn’t have done it without my village — my family and friends who continuously support me, empowering me to succeed no matter what! Especially my mom, my backbone!! I thank God for guiding me and allowing me to flourish as well! My journey continues because it is my destiny to further my education, and I WILL get it done!

If you read this far, thank you for listening to my testimony :) Now, we celebrateee🎉🎉

Daddy, I love and miss you dearly. This is for you❤️!
