Last Thursday I went up to take a penalty kick for my squad. As I am running up to shoot, loud coherent monkey noises can be heard in the opposing student section directed at me. An 18 year old black athlete.

These actions are unacceptable and disgusting. I WILL NOT stand for the racial injustice that plagues not just the beautiful game but the world we live in. We as human beings need to start addressing the real issue of individuals dehumanizing and degrading others as well as the fact that too many stand by without exploiting these unacceptable words/actions or educating those discriminating others.

It takes little effort to stand up and walk to the source of racism, it takes even less to say stop and educate someone on how easy it is to treat each other with the love and respect we deserve. We need to be better. We need to value each other as human beings.

I’m a son, a brother, a friend and an athlete for Christ. I know my worth. I’m chosen by God for greatness. I KNOW WHO I AM.
