Medicom Toy NEXT BE@RBRICK 100%

Medicom Toy’s new store NEXT opened at Shibuya PARCO.
The name NEXT carries multiple layers of meaning: it is not merely a new shop, but a signal to carry on the legacy and step into the next chapter for Medicom and BE@RBRICK.

Back in 2005, the BE@RBRICK World Wide Tour (BWWT) teamed up with Nike for this ultra-limited Mayfly collab.
This drop was extremely hard to cop, released via offline raffles only at the BWWT exhibition and selected premium Nike Consortium retailers globally.

The Nike Mayfly was never meant to last. Built with lightweight Tyvek fabric, it was engineered as a disposable race shoe with a design life of only 100km. The original warning tag clearly marks: DO NOT wear it over 100km. Once it hits that mileage, the upper will start to tear. The full set also came with a Nike Reuse-A-Shoe recycling card, for sending the worn-out pair back for repurposing.

BE@RBRICK WORLD WIDE TOUR 3 at Zhang Garden, Shanghai.
Twelve years ago, I attended BWWT2 at YOHOOD 2014 with my crew. Back then, BWWT2 was brought to Shanghai by Edison Chen. I wonder how those old friends are doing now.

BE@RBRICK was still a niche hobby, known only to a small group of enthusiasts. Later these bears blew up, flooded by hype and inflated resale prices. Now the fever has faded.

Markets rise and fall, but the toys remain the same.
This visit is more about reconnecting with my younger self who fell in love with BE@RBRICK all those years ago.

Long before, Bearbrick collaborated with Ping An Bank credit cards 17 years ago.
This marks Medicom’s very first collaboration with a mainland Chinese entity, a milestone release.

Unlike today’s easy mobile checkout shopping, the threshold to get these Bearbricks and accessories back then was extremely high.
Also, this set is reportedly the only Bearbrick series with visible screws on the back. The reason behind this design remains unknown.

Five credit card designs launched on June 1, 2009, named: ”Age of Innocence“, ”Star Trend Emperor“, ”Trend Queen“, ”Hip-hop Saint“, and ”Sweetheart Princess“.

For applications between June 1 and August 31, 2009:
New applicants needed to spend 6000 RMB within 3 months after activating their card, to earn a bandana and canvas tote bag.
If spending hit 10,000 RMB in 3 months, they would additionally receive one Bearbrick figure.

From Oct 1 to Dec 31, 2009, new applicants who spent a minimum of 100 RMB after card activation got a set of 4 luggage tags.

Two BE@RBRICK 100% from fragment design’s PEACE PIECE collection.

The monochrome bear bears the iconic “PEACE PIECE (FRGMT)” print on its chest, while the other features a fresh green grass splatter finish.
This PEACE PIECE project had its China debut launch at Amanyangyun Shanghai, Aman’s luxury resort in my hometown Shanghai. It was a very special pop-up event.

Just noticed it has been exactly three years since my last post here.
So many new experiences and little shifts in life over these three years.
Through it all, PEACE PIECE.
