✨demerara ✨

Inspired by a verse from Lullaby for Father by Warsan Shire. Our name echos with an element of our East African roots, as sugarcane has always been a big part of the region’s history and the old trade routes that brought different cultures together.

This idea of togetherness resonates with us as sugarcane grows throughout the Black and Brown diaspora, from Guyana, Uganda, Somalia, Mauritius, India, Papua New Guinea, and more, connecting us all.

The sweetness of the name symbolises the warmth and joy we want to share with our community and our addictive sound.

We’re all about curating a scene that explores multiple genres and sounds in a safe, welcoming and fun space for everyone who wants to enjoy good music, good people and good energy, without fear or judgment.

come dance with us!

Love, demerara x

Back at it this week with a HUGE guest on @reprezentradio this Monday!! Sugartrails are taking us to Somalia 🇸🇴🐪 and we’re gassed to have @elmi.original joining us on the journey 🔊💿

Elmi Original is a DJ, sound artist, and experimental musician whose work brings together Somali musical traditions and contemporary sound. Inspired by Somali poetry, songs, and the experiences of the Somali diaspora, he creates immersive soundscapes that explore themes of memory, migration, and identity. Rooted in tradition while embracing new ideas, Elmi’s work connects the past with the present, showing how culture continues to grow and evolve through sound.

Snippets from our latest Sugar Trail segment on @reprezentradio 🤎

For this one we focused on the Electronic Azmari vision of artist, @ethiopian_records 🇪🇹

In the show we started our journey in 1960s Ethiopia, lightly exploring the context of Ethiopian jazz and its fusion of Ethiopian scales with jazz harmony, funk, soul, and Latin rhythms.

We then highlighted a new generation of electronic producers. Specifically, Ethiopian Records.

His work forms part of a movement called Ethiopiyawi Electronic. Defined as: ‘A genre that uses electronic music tools and traditional East African music as a medium to reflect an East African perspective on the human experience.’

You can hear Azmari philosophy inside the structure of his music. Repetition, improvisation, storytelling and trance. Was so interesting to learn about the practice of an Azmari and we wish we could get more into it but look it up. 🫵🏽

For our Sugar Trail segment we like to show how different cultures have continuous musical lineage. From traditional to electronic 🕺🏽🪩

Listen back to the whole show on Reprezents
Mixcloud OR catch us LIVE bi-weekly, Monday 6-8pm OR both 🤭
